The tubuli recti (TR) are immunologically special, because the lymphocytes preferably accumulate around them during the course of T-cell dependent testicular autoimmunity in mice. This finding implies that the testicular interstitium around the TR is where autoreactive lymphocytes can gain access to autoimmunogenic germ cell antigens. In the present study, the histoarchitecture of the TR was minutely examined in normal mice. Three-dimensional analysis showed that 14-16 TR appeared to be connected to the rete testis (RT). Electron microscopical analysis revealed that the epithelial cells in the TR formed protruding cytoplasmic strings, with active endocytosis of degenerated spermatozoa, and exhibited three different morphological characteristics. Furthermore, a few macrophages were found to have penetrated into the TR. Immunohistochemical image analysis revealed that more macrophages specifically accumulated around the TR than the RT or seminiferous tubules. These findings indicate that macrophages preferentially accumulate around the TR, where contact between germ cell antigens and macrophages may occur under normal and pathological conditions.

Gametogenesis is suppressed in most members of the eusocial naked mole-rat (NMR) colony, while the queen selects mainly one breeding male during her life span. Recently, it was reported that the NMR testicular organization seems to produce spermatozoa on demand after suppression of spermatogenesis during most of gestation. A Sertoli cell "pump" is then used to flush the spermatozoa into short tubuli recti and simplified rete testis to reach the excurrent duct system.

Seminiferous tubules physically connect to the rete testis through short segments called the transition region (TR). During fetal development, this specialized junction is considered the initial site where testis cords begin to form and to grow in length well beyond birth and into adulthood and form convoluted tubular cores. Mitotic activity of the Sertoli cell, the somatic cell of the epithelium, ceases before puberty, but modified Sertoli cells in the TR remain immature and capable of proliferation.

The naked mole-rat (NMR) queen controls reproduction in her eusocial colony by usually selecting one male for reproduction and suppressing gametogenesis in all other males and females. Simplified, polymorphic and slow-swimming spermatozoa in the NMR seem to have been shaped by a low risk of sperm competition. We hypothesize that this unique mammalian social organization has had a dramatic influence on testicular features and spermatogenesis in the NMR.

As little information is available on the reproductive system of guinea fowl a study was conducted on 49 male guinea fowl to document the histological structure and developmental changes in the luminal diameter of the ducts within the excurrent duct system and associated changes in concentrations of testosterone. Age-related changes were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and medians separated by the Mann-Whitney U-test. Tubuli recti were clearly visible in the guinea fowl and the rete testes were both intracapsular and extracapsular.

Nitric oxide (NO) is produced by nitric oxide synthases (NOSs) and plays an important role in all levels of reproduction from the brain to the reproductive organs. Recently, it has been discovered that all germ cells and Leydig cells in the cat testis exhibit stage-dependent nuclear and cytoplasmic endothelial (eNOS) and inducible (iNOS)-NOS immunoreactivity and cytoplasmic nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase (NADPH-d) reactivity. As a continuation of this finding, in this study, cellular localization of NADPH-d and immunolocalization and expression of all three NOS isoforms were investigated in the intratesticular (tubuli recti and rete testis), and excurrent ducts (efferent ductules, epididymal duct and vas deferens) of adult cats using histochemistry, immunohistochemistry and western blotting.
