CO(2) embolism is a known, though rare, complication of procedures using CO(2) insufflation. We report massive cardiac right atrial CO(2) embolism during minimally invasive harvesting of a varicose great saphenous vein. The patient's hemodynamics deteriorated significantly and needed to be stabilized by emergency institution of cardiopulmonary bypass. Causes of this rare but potentially lethal complication are discussed, as well as its prediction, diagnosis, and prevention.

In coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) on pump, achieving optimal visualization is critical for surgical precision and safety. The use of blowers to clear the CABG anastomosis poses risks, including the formation of micro-embolic gas bubbles, which can be insidious and increase the risk of cerebral or myocardial complications. This retrospective study compares the effectiveness of the use of irrigation mist and CO versus a direct CO blower without irrigation in terms of visualization, postoperative fibrillation, and micro-embolic gas activity.

A common assumption of plant hydraulic physiology is that high hydraulic efficiency must come at the cost of hydraulic safety, generating a trade-off that raises doubts about the possibility of selecting both productive and drought-tolerant herbaceous crops. Wetland plants typically display high productivity, which requires high hydraulic efficiency to sustain transpiration rates coupled to CO uptake. Previous studies have suggested high vulnerability to xylem embolism of different wetland plants, in line with expected trade-offs.

Background: Unlike on-pump beating coronary artery bypass grafting, off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB) rarely causes intracardiac air embolisms. However, there have been several reports of air embolisms that occurred during OPCAB using a CO blower, which is commonly used to facilitate visualization of the anastomotic site. Herein, we describe a rare case of air bubbles detected only in the left ventricle during OPCAB.
