Ticks obtain a blood meal by lacerating small blood vessels and ingesting the blood that flows to the feeding site, which triggers various host responses. However, ticks face the challenge of wound healing, a process involving hemostasis, inflammation, cell proliferation and migration, and remodeling, hindering blood acquisition. To overcome these obstacles, tick salivary glands produce an array of bioactive molecules.

First prepared in the late 70s, the pro-ligand 1,3-bis(3,5-dioxo-1-hexyl)benzene (Hbdhb) contains two acetoacetyl terminations linked to a central 1,3-phenylene unit through dimethylene bridges. Since each termination can be either in diketonic or keto-enolic form, in organic solution it exists as a mixture of three spectroscopically resolvable tautomers. In the presence of pyridine, Co and the bdhb anion form a crystalline dimeric compound with formula [Co(bdhb)(py)] (2) and a Co⋯Co separation of more than 11 Å.

The behavior of water molecules around organic molecules has attracted considerable attention as a crucial factor influencing the properties and functions of soft matter and biomolecules. Recently, it has been suggested that the change in protein stability upon the addition of small organic molecules (osmolytes) is dominated by the change in the water dynamics caused by the osmolyte, where the dynamics of not only the directly interacting water molecules but also the long-range hydration layer affect the protein stability. However, the relation between the long-range structure of hydration water in various solutions and the water dynamics remains unclear at the molecular level.

New antimicrobial strategies are needed to address pathogen resistance to currently used antibiotics. Bacterial central metabolism is a promising target space for the development of agents that selectively target bacterial pathogens. 1-Deoxy-d-xylulose 5-phosphate synthase (DXPS) converts pyruvate and d-glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate (d-GAP) to DXP, which is required for synthesis of essential vitamins and isoprenoids in bacterial pathogens.

carbapenemase (KPC) variants have been described that confer resistance to both ceftazidime-avibactam and cefiderocol. Of these, KPC-33 and KPC-31 are D179Y-containing variants derived from KPC-2 and KPC-3, respectively. To better understand this atypical phenotype, the catalytic mechanism of ceftazidime and cefiderocol hydrolysis by KPC-33 and KPC-31 as well as the ancestral KPC-2 and KPC-3 enzymes was studied.
