Objective: To investigate the osteoclastic activity in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) invading the jaws and to observe the expression of RANKL and OPG, the two bone resorption related cytokines, in these cases.
Methods: Twelve cases of OSCC invading the mandible were studied. After pathological diagnosis, operations were done to remove part of the mandible depending upon the X-ray findings. Fresh soft tissue specimens were frozen-sectioned and other specimens with the bone tissue were fixed and decalcified to make paraffin sections. Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase(TRAP) staining and immunohistochemical staining were then applied to observe the location of osteoclasts and the expression of RANKL and OPG.
Results: TRAP positive multinuclear cells were detected near the interface between the bone and tumor. RANKL positive cells were commonly seen on the endothelium of blood vessel and basement membrane of the epithelium. But OPG reactivities were not seen in these sections.
Conclusion: The bone destruction caused by OSCC is mediated by osteoclasts but not by cancer cell itself. It appears that the differentiation and activation of osteoclasts were induced by OSCC through cytokines like RANKL.

Septic arthritis (SA) caused by Staphylococcus aureus is a severe inflammatory joint disease, characterized by synovitis accompanied with cartilage destruction and bone erosion. The available antibiotic treatment alone is insufficient to resolve the inflammation that leads to high rates of morbidity and mortality. Among the CD4 T helper lymphocytes, the Th17 and Tregs are key regulators of immune homeostasis.

Periodontitis is a microbe-driven inflammatory disease leading to bone resorption and tissue destruction. We propose a dual-functional nanogel complex armed with the antimicrobial drug triclosan (TCS) and the pro-angiogenesis medication deferoxamine (DFO) for combating microbial pathogens and promoting tissue regeneration. The nanogel system (NG-TCS-DFO) that we fabricated from linear polyglycerol exhibits well-defined spherical morphology and a positively charged surface for bacteria adhesion.

The past several decades have seen significant advancements in joint replacement surgery for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Joint replacement procedures have become vital options for patients with severe joint damage and functional impairment. There has been an increased emphasis on personalized surgical strategies that tailor joint replacement decisions based on a patient's unique clinical characteristics and the extent of joint damage.

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a destructive bone disease, and overuse of alcohol is one of the major contributing factors. Although mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and their exosomes have been reported to attenuate ONFH, the potential mechanisms of alcohol-induced ONFH (AONFH) are unclear. Here, we isolated and identified human umbilical cord MSCs-derived exosomal (hucMSCs-exos) miR-25-3p.

Background: The periosteum consists of an outer fibrous layer and an inner cellular layer, where bone cells reside. Hence, it has been suggested that applying periosteum to a periodontal defect may help new bone formation. The purpose of this case study is to present the clinical and radiographic outcomes of a vestibular regenerative approach and the application of a connective tissue graft (CTG) with periosteum to improve the periodontal prognosis of a pathologically migrated hopeless tooth with an endo-periodontal lesion (EPL).
