Reaction of LnCl3 with KSeAr* in thf afforded the unsolvated, alkane-soluble complexes LnCl(SeAr*)2 (Ln = Nd, Pr; Ar* = 2,6-Trip(2)C(6)H(3); Trip = 2,4,6-iPr(3)C(6)H(2)) in which the rare-earth metal cations show additional eta6-pi-coordination by two flanking arene rings.

Exploration of a novel structural motif of host-guest interactions is one of the most fundamental topics to develop macrocycle-based host-guest/supramolecular systems. Herein, we present an unprecedented mode of inclusion of aromatic hydrocarbons into a macrocyclic cavity multipoint Ag-π bonding as a driving force. A dinuclear Ag-macrocycle encapsulated one molecule of anthracene, a typical planar aromatic hydrocarbon, in solution and in the solid state.

A recent study (Sci. Adv. 2017, 3, e1602833) has shown that FH⋅⋅⋅OH hydrogen bond in a HF⋅H O pair substantially shortens, and the H-F bond elongates upon encapsulation of the cluster in C fullerene.

Cation-π interactions are one of the most important classes of noncovalent bonding, and are seen throughout biology, chemistry, and materials science. However, in almost every documented case, these interactions play only a supporting role to much stronger covalent or dative bonds, thus making examples of exclusive cation-π bonding exceedingly rare. In this study, a neutral diboryne molecule is found to encapsulate the light alkali metal cations Li(+) and Na(+) in the absence of a net charge, covalent bonds, or lone-pair donor groups.

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) is successfully in situ encapsulated into the poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA)/PEO-PPO-PEO (F108) electrospun fibrous membranes (EFMs) by emulsion electrospinning. The adsorption and degradation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) by HRP-EFMs are investigated. The experimental results show that the sorption kinetic of PCP on EFMs follows the pseudo-second-order model, and the sorption capacity is as high as 44.

The effect of different oxidation and reducing pretreatments on dendrimer-encapsulated platinum nanoparticles (Pt-DENs) dispersed on a high-surface-area sol-gel-made silica support was assessed by evaluating the capacity of the resulting catalysts to adsorb CO, NO, and acetylene using IR absorption spectroscopy. The untreated catalysts are themselves capable of CO uptake, but only slowly, in a diffusion-controlled process, and into a weak adsorption state. Either oxygen or hydrogen pretreatments are required for stronger adsorption.
