Various remote effects of cancer or paraneoplastic syndromes (PNS) are common in lung cancer, and may be the manifestation of the disease or its recurrence. The symptoms may be endocrine, neuromuscular or musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, cutaneous, hematologic, gastrointestinal, renal, or miscellaneous in nature. Since the symptoms of paraneoplastic syndromes may occur before the local symptoms of the primary tumor, it might be helpful in the early diagnosis of malignancy. We present a 65-year-old man with multiple paraneoplastic syndrome forms consisting of pancytopenia leukocytoclastic vasculitis and hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy, associated with non-small cell lung carcinoma.

Oncogenic Osteomalacia as the Initial Presentation of Pleural Epithelioid Hemangioendothelioma: A Case Report.

Cureus

December 2024

Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, SAU.

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) is a rare form of vascular neoplasm that can manifest with various symptoms or be discovered incidentally in asymptomatic patients. In this report, we describe a case of a 56-year-old male who presented with progressive lower limb weakness over four years. The evaluation revealed severe hypophosphatemia, an inappropriately normal fibroblast growth factor 23 C-terminal (cFGF-23) level, and a 30 x 20 mm hypermetabolic right pleural mass, which was subsequently proven to be EHE.

Polyneuropathy, Organomegaly, Endocrinopathy, Monoclonal Gammopathy, and Skin Changes (POEMS) syndrome is a rare paraneoplastic disorder caused by plasma cell proliferation and overproduction of cytokines, particularly vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). This complex syndrome affects multiple organ systems and presents with a broad range of clinical and laboratory manifestations, which can complicate both diagnosis and management. Not all components of the acronym are observed in every patient, highlighting the clinical heterogeneity of the condition.

Development of Peptide Mimics of the Human Acetylcholine Receptor Main Immunogenic Region for Treating Myasthenia Gravis.

Department of Neurology, Davis School of Medicine, University of California, 1515 Newton Court, Davis, CA 95618, USA.

We have designed and produced 39 amino acid peptide mimics of the and human acetylcholine receptors' (AChRs) main immunogenic regions (MIRs). These conformationally sensitive regions consist of three non-contiguous segments of the AChR α-subunits and are the target of 50-70% of the anti-AChR autoantibodies (Abs) in human myasthenic serum and in the serum of rats with a model of that disease, experimental autoimmune myasthenia gravis (EAMG), induced by immunizing the rats with the electric organ AChR. These MIR segments covalently joined together bind a significant fraction of the monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) raised in rats against electric organ AChR.
