Development of Prediction Model for Hirschsprung-Associated Enterocolitis (HAEC) in Postoperative Hirschsprung Patients.

J Pediatr Surg

December 2024

Division of Pediatric Surgery, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai, Thailand; Clinical Surgical Research Center, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, Thailand; Clinical Epidemiology and Statistical Statistic Center, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai, Thailand. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to create a clinical prediction model for determining the risk of postoperative Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis (HAEC) within 5 years following surgery in children with Hirschsprung disease.
  • The research included 274 patients, revealing that 27.4% experienced HAEC, with eight significant predictors identified, like gender, weight at surgery, and the type of surgical approach.
  • The prediction model demonstrated promising accuracy (AuROC of 0.749) and established risk categories (low and high), aiding in patient management and follow-up; an online tool was also developed for calculating individual risk.

Tracheoplasty should be proactively considered in the surgical strategy for treating the ring-sling complex.

J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg

February 2025

Department of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery, Shanghai Children's Medical Center, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China; Department of Pediatric Surgery, Sanya Women and Children's Hospital, Affiliated to Shanghai Children's Medical Center, Hainan, China. Electronic address:

Objective: To examine the safety and effectiveness of proactive tracheoplasty for pediatric ring-sling complex.

Methods: We retrospectively collected data from 304 children who were diagnosed with a ring-sling complex and underwent surgery at 3 cardiac centers in China between January 2010 and June 2023. The children were categorized into 3 surgical groups: concurrent sling and tracheal surgery (group A; n = 258), staged sling and tracheal surgery (group B; n = 25), and sling-only surgery (group C; n = 21).

Severity assessment for coarctation of the aorta (CoA) is challenging due to concomitant morphological anomalies (complex CoA) and inaccurate Doppler-based indices. Promising diagnostic performance has been reported for the continuous flow pressure gradient (CFPG), but it has not been studied in complex CoA. Our objective was to characterize the effect of complex CoA and associated hemodynamics on CFPG in a clinical cohort.

A 3-Year Study Investigating the Utility of Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System-29 for Long-Term Follow-Up in Adult Spinal Deformity.

World Neurosurg

June 2024

Department of Neurological Surgery, Saint Luke's Neurological & Spine Surgery, Kansas City, MO, USA. Electronic address:

Background: Adult spinal deformity (ASD) significantly impacts the quality of life due to three-dimensional spinal abnormalities. Patient-reported outcome measures, such as the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS-29), play a crucial role in assessing postoperative outcomes. This study aims to investigate trends in PROMIS-29 scores over 36 months in patients undergoing long-segment thoracolumbar fusion for ASD and provide insights into its long-term utility.
