Tools to examine the effects of teaching interventions across a variety of studies are needed. The authors perform a meta-analysis of 24 randomized controlled trials evaluating the effects of teaching on medical students' patient communication skills. Study quality is rated using a modified Jadad score, and standardized mean difference effect size (d) measures are calculated. Fifteen of 24 studies have sufficient data for analysis. Students' ability to establish rapport improves after teaching. The effects are large when the teaching intervention was small group discussion (n = 5) or giving structured feedback on a student-patient interview (n = 6). A similar effect of teaching is seen on student data gathering skills (n = 5). Teaching medical students patient communication skills using small group discussion or providing feedback on a student-patient interview results in improvement in student performance.

Methods: Participants participated in a one-hour simulation experience with two cases. Performance was assessed pre- and post-intervention using a checklist measuring communication domains related to equity and access in telehealth.

Patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) capture patients' views of their health status and the use of PROMs as part of standard care of children and young people has the potential to improve communication between patients/carers and clinicians and the quality of care. Electronic systems for the collection of or access to PROMs and integrating PROMs into electronic health records facilitates their implementation in routine care and could help maximise their value. Yet little is known about the technical aspects of implementation including the electronic systems available for collection and capture and how this may influence the value of PROMs in routine care which this scoping review aims to explore.

Effective communication with the child and his/her parents is of paramount importance in our daily work in paediatric radiology to establish a trusting relationship and enhance satisfaction for both patients and physicians. Although communication skills and empathy can be effectively taught, and efforts have been made in this area in medical schools, there is still much room for improvement, as communication skills tend to decline throughout medical training. Certain methods are valuable for conducting effective consultations with both the child and the parents, not only when breaking bad news.
