The public-health significance of far-UVC-induced indoor ozone and its associated secondary chemistry.

Photochem Photobiol

September 2024

Center for Radiological Research, Columbia University, New York, New York, USA.

There has been much recent interest in whole-room far-UVC (wavelength around 222 nm) to markedly and safely reduce overall levels of airborne pathogens in occupied indoor locations. Far-UVC light produces very low levels of ozone-in real-world scenarios induced ozone levels of less than 10 ppb, and much less in moderately or well-ventilated rooms compliant with US far-UVC dose recommendations, and very much less in rooms compliant with international far-UVC dose standards. At these very low ozone levels, there is no epidemiological evidence of increased health risks from any of the very large outdoor ozone studies, whether from ozone alone or from ozone plus associated pollutants.

When letters containing anthrax spores were mailed to several US senators and media offices in September 2001, just one week after the 9/11 attacks, bioterrorism catapulted to the national stage. Political leaders and public health officials, desperate for guidance on this once-theoretical scenario, turned to experts including Tom Inglesby, then deputy director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Civilian Biodefense Strategies, a bioterrorism research and analysis think tank in Baltimore. In the years that followed, Inglesby and his colleagues ran exercises to simulate bioterror incidents, established a peer-reviewed journal on biodefense and advised government agencies on how to reduce the public health impact of biological threats.

Curr Opin Infect Dis

June 2003

Center for Pediatric Research, Eastern Virginia Medical School and Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, Norfolk, Virginia 23510, USA.

Purpose Of Review: Caliciviruses are a major cause of human illness, and are listed as category B pathogens according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases classification of pathogens important for biodefense. Caliciviruses are commonly encountered in contaminated food and water, and a large variety has been implicated as sources of infection during outbreak investigations.

Recent Findings: New names for two of the four genera of the Caliciviridae were approved in 2002.
