This is a retrospective report on clinical features, laryngoscopic examinations, and follow-up markers of laryngeal manifestation described as bamboo nodes in three female patients with transverse cystic lesions of the vocal folds, treated with logopedic therapy. This study examines logopedic and phoniatric aspects in patients with submucosal "bamboo joint-like nodes" of both vocal folds, and reveals an improvement of different voice quality features after conservative traditional voice therapy. There still exists no standard treatment regimen in patients with rheumatoid disease of the larynx; a lack of consensus is most evident in the role of voice therapy. We would like to emphasize the favorable impact of logopedic therapy in benign laryngeal disorders with underlying autoimmune diseases.

Enhanced Compressive Mechanical Properties of Bio-Inspired Lattice Metamaterials with Taper Struts.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

Suzhou XDM 3D Printing Technology Co., Ltd., Suzhou 215000, China.

The stress distribution within the struts of lattice metamaterials is non-uniform under compressive loads, with stress concentrations typically occurring at the node regions. Inspired by bamboo, this study proposes a type of body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice metamaterial with tapered prism struts (BCCT). The compressive behavior, deformation modes, mechanical properties, and failure mechanisms of BCCT lattice metamaterials are systematically analyzed using finite element methods and validated through compression tests.

Bamboo is an ideal green building material with excellent mechanical properties. Phosphogypsum (PG) is a kind of solid waste residue which is in urgent need of resource utilization and has been used as construction material. In this paper, a kind of round bamboo-fiber reinforced phosphogypsum composite short column was proposed.

Background: Woody bamboos are the only diverse large perennial grasses in mesic-wet forests and are widely distributed in the understory and canopy. The functional trait variations and trade-offs in this taxon remain unclear due to woody bamboo syndromes (represented by lignified culm of composed internodes and nodes). Here, we examined the effects of heritable legacy and occurrence site climates on functional trait variations in leaf and culm across 77 woody bamboo species in a common garden.

Phylogenomic profiles of whole-genome duplications in Poaceae and landscape of differential duplicate retention and losses among major Poaceae lineages.

Nat Commun

Department of Biology, the Eberly College of Science, and the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences, the Pennsylvania State University, University Park, State College, PA, 16802, USA.

Poaceae members shared a whole-genome duplication called rho. However, little is known about the evolutionary pattern of the rho-derived duplicates among Poaceae lineages and implications in adaptive evolution. Here we present phylogenomic/phylotranscriptomic analyses of 363 grasses covering all 12 subfamilies and report nine previously unknown whole-genome duplications.
