Background: We learned from a focus group that many patients find discharge to be one of the least satisfying elements of the hospital experience. Patients cited insufficient communication about the day and time of the impending discharge as a cause of dissatisfaction.

Objective: In partnership with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Improvement Action Network collaborative, we tested the practicality of an in-room "discharge appointment" (DA) display.

Setting And Patients: Eight inpatient care units in 2 hospitals at an academic medical center (Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN).

Intervention: DA displayed on a specially designed bedside dry-erase board.

Measurements: The primary outcome was the proportion of discharged patients who had been given a DA, including same-day DAs. Secondary outcomes were (1) the proportion of DAs scheduled before the actual dismissal day and (2) the timeliness of the actual departure compared with the DA.

Results: During the 4-month period, 2046 patients were discharged. Of those, 1256 patients (61%) were given a posted DA, of which 576 (46%) were scheduled at least a day in advance and 752 (60%) departed from the care unit within 30 minutes of the appointed time.

Conclusions: With a program for in-room display of a DA in various hospital units, more than half the patients had a DA set, and most of the DA patients departed on time. Further investigation is needed to determine the effect of DAs on patient and provider satisfaction.

The 4-methyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)-2,1-borazaronaphthalene molecule Hazab-py has been successfully used, for the first time, as a ligand in a ruthenium(II) polypyridine complex A (with the formula [Ru(dtbbpy)(azab-py)], where dtbbpy = 4,4'-di--butyl-2,2'-bipyridine). This compound was characterized by NMR spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry (MS), and its electrochemical and photophysical properties were fully investigated and compared to those of its homoleptic analogue [Ru(dtbbpy)] (B), an archetypical mono-cationic cyclometalated complex C (with the formula [Ru(dtbbpy)(ppy)], where Hppy = 2-phenylpyridine), and the more structurally similar analogue [Ru(dtbbpy)(naft-py)] (D), where the B-N unit of the azaborine ligand is replaced by a standard CC one, resulting in the 2-(naphthalen-2-yl)pyridine ligand (Hnaft-py). The presence of the novel 1,2-azaborine ligand induces a 0.

Deep-Learning-Based Real-Time Passive Non-Line-of-Sight Imaging for Room-Scale Scenes.

Sensors (Basel)

Article Synopsis
  • - Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging allows for reconstructing hidden scenes behind obstacles, which can be useful for smart home security and navigation while ensuring privacy protection.
  • - A convolutional neural network, called the unseen scene encoding enhancement network (USEEN), is developed to enhance scene reconstruction, achieving quick processing times of 12.2 milliseconds per estimate.
  • - Performance metrics show that the USEEN model maintains good accuracy under varying light conditions, with peak signal-to-noise ratios (PSNR) and structural similarity indices (SSIM) indicating its effectiveness, especially for smart home applications.

Article Synopsis
  • * It introduces R2S, a tabletop display system that encourages older adults to collaboratively view and discuss news articles, tested in a Dutch care home over six weeks.
  • * Results indicate R2S effectively promoted social interactions and altered behaviors, with participants reporting a positive user experience despite minimal affective social benefits.

Head-mounted displays (HMDs) in room-scale virtual reality are usually tracked using inside-out visual SLAM algorithms. Alternatively, to track the motion of the HMD with respect to a fixed real-world reference frame, an outside-in instrumentation like a motion capture system can be adopted. However, outside-in tracking systems may temporarily lose tracking as they suffer by occlusion and blind spots.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive disorder marked by a decline in kidney function. Obesity and sedentary behavior contribute to the development of CKD, though mechanisms by which this occurs are poorly understood. This knowledge gap is worsened by the lack of a reliable murine CKD model that does not rely on injury, toxin, or gene deletion to induce a reduction in kidney function.
