Dysregulated epithelial cell kinetics associated with mucosal barrier dysfunction may be involved in certain intestinal disorders. We previously showed that chronic psychological stress, in the form of repetitive sessions of water avoidance stress (WAS), has a major detrimental impact on ileal barrier function. We hypothesized that these changes were related to a disturbance in enterocyte kinetics. Rats were submitted to WAS (1 h/day) for 5 or 10 days. As previously shown, permeability to macromolecules was enhanced in rats stressed for 5 and 10 days compared with controls. WAS induced a decrease in crypt depth at day 5 associated with an increased number of apoptotic cells. Cell proliferation was significantly increased at days 5 and 10. Villus height and the specific activity of sucrase were significantly reduced at day 10. We concluded that WAS induces a disturbance of epithelial cell kinetics, with the pattern depending on the duration of the stress period. These findings help to explain the mechanism underlying altered epithelial barrier function resulting from exposure to chronic psychological stress.

Preliminary test a two stage, self-determination theory (SDT) and participation-based physical activity and peer support intervention for individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). In Stage 1, four focus groups were conducted to provide insights about individuals' needs and experiences with physical activity. In Stage 2, four individuals with COPD aged 76-90 years (50% female) participated in an eight-week online physical activity and peer support intervention.

Introduction: The beneficial effects of substituting sugar with non-caloric sweeteners (NCSs) remain uncertain due to the mismatch between their rewarding sweet taste and lack of energy content. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies indicate an influence of cognitive processes (e.g.

The unpredictable nature of stress complicates understanding its relationship with male infertility. In this study, we investigated testicular germ cell and junctional dynamics in male mice following exposure to chronic unpredictable stress (CUS). Adult Parkes male mice were exposed to CUS for 35 days (one complete spermatogenic cycle), with a random stressor (restraint stress, water deprivation, food deprivation, light flashing, wet bedding, cage shaking, or cage tilting) applied once per day in an intermittent and unpredictable manner to avoid repeating the same stimulus on consecutive days.
