The development of a test chip that will be used to evaluate a hermetic and biocompatible package for the driving CMOS circuitry of a retinal prosthesis is described. The package design is estimated to be about 2 x 2 x 0.3 mm(3) and will be formed by conformal layers of parylene and a metal (e.g. titanium) as inner and outer protections, respectively. The test chip has been specifically designed for evaluation of the packaging technology. It consists of many blocks of analog and digital components as well as relative humidity and temperature sensors. The test chip has more probe points than a typical chip, allowing a more thorough evaluation of circuit behavior during the testing. This chip will first be coated in a layer of parylene C and soaked in heated isotonic saline for an extended period of time. Every block in the chip will then be tested for functionality using the surface probe points. The next step is to coat the surface of another test chip with parylene and a metal and repeat these soak tests. The results will then be analyzed and mean time-to-failure for the different samples will then be computed. Using the accelerated testing paradigm, these results will then be extrapolated to mean time-to-failure in the operating intraocular environment. Parylene test structures have already undergone an accelerated lifetime test and results have been analyzed.

The practical implementation of terahertz (THz) imaging and spectroscopic systems in real operational conditions requires them to be of a compact size, to have enhanced functionality, and to be user-friendly. This work demonstrates the single-sided integration of Fresnel-zone-plate-based optical elements with InGaAs bow-tie diodes directly on a semiconductor chip. Numerical simulations were conducted to optimize the Fresnel zone plate's focal length and the InP substrate's thickness to achieve constructive interference at 600 GHz, room-temperature operation and achieve a sensitivity more than an order of magnitude higher-up to 24.

With the demand for high-safety, high-integration, and lightweight micro- and nano-electronic components, an MEMS electromagnetic energy-releasing component was innovatively designed based on the corona discharge theory. The device subverted the traditional device-level protection method for electromagnetic energy, realizing the innovation of adding a complex circuit system to the integrated chip through micro-nanometer processing technology and enhancing the chip's size from the centimeter level to the micron level. In this paper, the working performance of the MEMS electromagnetic energy-releasing component was verified through a combination of a simulation, a static experiment, and a dynamic test, and a characterization test of the tested MEMS electromagnetic energy-releasing component was carried out to thoroughly analyze the effect of the MEMS electromagnetic energy-releasing component.

A Method for Determining the Minimum Thickness of the Cut Layer in Precision Milling.

Materials (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Machine Design and Manufacturing Engineering, Kielce University of Technology, al. Tysiaclecia Panstwa Polskiego 7, 25-314 Kielce, Poland.

The minimum cutting thickness is a key value in machining processes, as below this value the material will only undergo elastic and plastic deformation without chip removal. Existing measurement methods require time-consuming preparation and complicated procedures. This work focuses on the development of a new, simplified method for determining the minimum cutting thickness (h) using a contact profilometer that can be used in industry.

The surface roughness of hole machining greatly influences the mechanical properties of parts, such as early fatigue failure and corrosion resistance. The boring and trepanning association (BTA) deep hole drilling with axial vibration assistance is a compound machining process of the tool cutting and the guide block extrusion. At the same time, the surface of the hole wall is also ironed by the axial large amplitude and low-frequency vibration of the guide block.
