It has been well established that critically sampled boundary pre-/postfiltering operators can improve the coding efficiency and mitigate blocking artifacts in traditional discrete cosine transform-based block coders at low bit rates. In these systems, both the prefilter and the postfilter are square matrices. This paper proposes to use undersampled boundary pre- and postfiltering modules, where the pre-/postfilters are rectangular matrices. Specifically, the prefilter is a "fat" matrix, while the postfilter is a "tall" one. In this way, the size of the prefiltered image is smaller than that of the original input image, which leads to improved compression performance and reduced computational complexities at low bit rates. The design and VLSI-friendly implementation of the undersampled pre-/postfilters are derived. Their relations to lapped transforms and filter banks are also presented. Two design examples are also included to demonstrate the validity of the theory. Furthermore, image coding results indicate that the proposed undersampled pre-/postfiltering systems yield excellent and stable performance in low bit-rate image coding.

The earliest Miocene (Aquitanian, 23-20 Ma) remains a critically under-sampled 'dark age' in cetacean evolution. This is especially true of baleen whales (mysticetes), Aquitanian specimens of which remain almost entirely unknown. Across the globe, the nature of the cetacean fossil record radically shifts at the Oligocene-Miocene boundary, with mysticetes and some archaic odontocete lineages suddenly disappearing despite the availability of cetacean-bearing rock units.

Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary (OCNMS), which was established in 1994 and covers an area of 8257 km, is located along Washington State's remote and rugged outer coast towards the northernmost extent of the California Current System (CCS). In this region, summertime equatorward winds drive seasonal upwelling of cold, nutrient rich waters onto the continental shelf. These waters help fuel a highly diverse and productive ecosystem that includes marine mammal and seabird communities as well as commercially and culturally important fisheries.

Purpose: To improve the scan efficiency of thoracic aorta vessel wall imaging using a self-gating (SG)-based motion correction scheme.
Materials And Methods: A slab-selective variable-flip-angle 3D turbo spin-echo (SPACE) sequence was modified to acquire SG signals and imaging data. Cartesian sampling with a tiny golden-step spiral profile ordering was used to obtain the imaging data during the systolic period, and then the image data were subsequently corrected based on the SG signals and binned to different respiratory cycles.
