We study the sponge phase of the mixed non-ionic/ionic surfactant system C14DMAO-TTAB-hexanol-brine. Our aim is to determine if this phase exists in this mixed system and if it preserves or changes its structure when the relative amount of the charged surfactant is increased in the mixture. SAXS, FFEM, and conductivity results show that for the same bilayer volume fraction the sponge phase preserves its global structure. We propose a method to determine the geometrical obstruction factor from electrical conductivity measurements in ionic sponge phases. Analysis of lamellar phases in the same system shows that the bilayer thickness increases when the ionic surfactant concentration is increased.

Achieving dynamic multicolor emission through solid-state molecular motion is of significant importance for advancing applications in organic solid-state luminescent materials. Herein, we report macrocycle crystals with unique forward‒ and retro‒vapofluorochromic behavior, which is realized by reversible amine vapor uptake and amine‒"squeeze" induced guest release. The forward‒vapofluorochromism occurs when aliphatic amines penetrate guest-free macrocycle crystals to form host‒guest complex crystals.

Four previously undescribed cyclic peptides, reniochpeptins A-D (1-4), were isolated from the marine sponge Reniochalina sp. Their structures were elucidated through comprehensive spectroscopic analyses and a modified advanced Marfey's method. This method utilized ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem multiple reaction monitoring mass spectrometry, employing a CORTECS T column to achieve simultaneous separation of derivatized -Leu, -Ile, -allo-Ile, -Leu, -Ile, and -allo-Ile within 25 minutes in a single analytical run.

The continuous development and application of pesticides in agriculture require robust multiresidue detection methods to guarantee food safety. This study introduces a novel method for multiresidue determination of pesticides in eggplants using the QuEChERS procedure, incorporating a clean-up step using carbon nanotubes stabilized in chitosan sponge (CNT-CS) and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) for analysis. Upon identifying the optimal extraction conditions, various sorbents were assessed for their efficacy in the dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE).

Dispersal is an important life history trait that plays a key role in the demography and evolution of species. We employed a combined approach of DNA sequencing and transmission electron microscopy to examine the changes in the microbiome during the ontogeny and dispersal of the coral-excavating sponge Thoosa mismalolli. The results show that sponge can acquired their associated bacteria via both vertical (VT) and horizontal transmission (HT).

Uncontrollable non-compressible hemorrhage and traumatic infection have been major causes of mortality and disability in both civilian and military populations. A dressing designed for point-of-care control of non-compressible hemorrhage and prevention of traumatic infections represents an urgent medical need. Here, a novel self-gelling sponge OHN@ε-pL is developed, integrating N-succinimidyl ester oxidized hyaluronic acid (OHN) and ε-poly-L-lysine (ε-pL).
