Seventeen superbasic phosphazenes and two Verkade's bases were used to supplement and extend the experimental gas-phase basicity scale in the superbasic region. For 19 strong bases the gas-phase basicity values (GB) were determined for the first time. Among them are such well-known bases as BEMP (1071.2 kJ/mol), Verkade's Me-substituted base (1083.8 kJ/mol), Et-N=P(NMe2)2-N=P(NMe2)3 (Et-P2 phosphazene, 1106.9 kJ/mol), and t-Bu-N=P(NMe2)3 (t-Bu-P1 phosphazene, 1058.0 kJ/mol). For the first time experimental GB values were determined for P2 phosphazenes. Together with our previous results self-consistent experimental gas-phase basicity scale between 1020 and 1107 kJ/mol is now established. This way an important region of the gas-phase basicity scale, which was earlier dominated by metal hydroxide bases, is now covered also with organic bases making it more accessible for further studies. The GB values for several superbases were calculated using density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-311+G** level. For the phosphazene family the standard deviation of the correlation between the experimental and theoretical values was 6.5 kJ/mol.

The bimolecular reactions between Criegee intermediates (CIs) and atmospheric trace species have been extensively investigated, with a particular focus on the reaction with water, while the catalytic role of atmospheric organic compounds in hydration reactions was often neglected. In this study, we employed quantum chemical calculations and Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) simulations to investigate the catalytic effects of atmospheric organic amines, organic acids, and alcohols on the hydration reactions of CIs in the gas phase and at the gas-liquid interface. The catalytic reactions were found to follow a cyclic catalytic structure and a stepwise reaction mechanism.

The solvation parameter model uses six descriptors identified as excess molar refraction, E, dipolarity/polarizability, S, overall hydrogen-bond acidity, A, overall hydrogen-bond basicity, B, McGowan's characteristic volume, V, and the gas-liquid partition constant on hexadecane at 25 °C, L to model the distribution of neutral compounds in biphasic systems. Abraham's version of this model uses all six descriptors with two separate linear free energy relationship models for the transfer of compounds from a gas phase to a condensed phase and between condensed phases. Goss proposed a modification to this model that uses a single calibration model regardless of the physical state for each phase and five of the descriptors employed in Abraham's model (E descriptor is eliminated).

In this review, the principles of gas-phase proton basicity measurements and theoretical calculations are recalled as a reminder of how the basicity PA/GB scale, based on Brønsted-Lowry theory, was constructed in the gas-phase (PA-proton affinity and/or GB-gas-phase basicity in the enthalpy and Gibbs energy scale, respectively). The origins of exceptionally strong gas-phase basicity of some organic nitrogen bases containing N-sp (amines), N-sp (imines, amidines, guanidines, polyguanides, phosphazenes), and N-sp (nitriles) are rationalized. In particular, the role of push-pull nitrogen bases in the development of the gas-phase basicity in the superbasicity region is emphasized.

The modification of surface basicity and its role in naphthalene oxidation: The effect of the basic sites introduced by Ce.

School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Zhejiang Gongshang University, Hangzhou, 310018, China; Zhejiang Province Key Laboratory of Solid Waste Treatment and Recycling, Hangzhou, 310012, China. Electronic address:

A series of V-xCe/Ti catalysts was prepared by a step impregnation method with gradual increased Ce amount. Compared to the commercial V-W/Ti catalysts, the V-xCe/Ti catalysts exhibited considerably higher CO selectivity during the oxidation of naphthalene (Nap), and less intermediates or by-products were detected both in gas phase and on the surface of the catalysts. Through a series of characterizations, it was found that abundance of weak basic sites in the form of OH was introduced by Ce, as well as the oxygen vacancies caused by the redox cycle of V+Ce↔V+Ce.

As an ambident nucleophile, CN has both C and N atoms that can act as the reactive center to facilitate substitution reactions. We investigate in detail the potential energy profiles of CN(HO) with CHCHX (X = Cl, Br, I) to explore the influence of solvent molecules on competition between the different nucleophilic atoms C and N involving the S2 and E2 pathways. The energy barrier sequence for the transition states follows C@inv-S2 < N@inv-S2 < C@anti-E2 < N@anti-E2.
