Collapse after prolonged endurance exercise is common and usually benign. This case study reports a triathlete who suffered a vaso-vagal associated collapsed after exercise. Misdiagnosis of myocardial injury in the presence of elevated cardiac troponins and ECG anomalies led to inappropriate management and highlights the difficulty in treating the collapsed athlete following arduous exercise.

The population of older adults is exponentially expanding. Alongside aging comes the onset of chronic disease, decline of functional capacity, and reduced quality of life. Thus, this population increase will stress the capacity and financial viability of health and long-term care systems.

The jaw muscles of the southern alligator lizard, Elgaria multicarinata, are used in prolonged mate-holding behavior, and also to catch fast prey. In both males and females, these muscles exhibit an unusual type of high endurance known as sustained force in which contractile force does not return to baseline between subsequent contractions. This phenomenon is assumed to facilitate the prolonged mate-holding observed in this species.

A Warm Environment Reduces Exogenous Glucose Oxidation and Endurance Performance during Cycling with Facing Airflow.

Med Sci Sports Exerc

December 2024

National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine, School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, Loughborough University, Loughborough, UNITED KINGDOM.

Unlabelled: Exercise in warm environments increases thermal/cardiovascular strain and decreases gastrointestinal (GI) integrity and endurance performance. However, laboratory-based studies have provided little to/no facing airflow, potentially exacerbating these effects, particularly for cycling, where convective cooling may be a major contributor to thermal balance.

Purpose: This study investigated the effect of cycling in a warm vs temperate environment with sufficient facing airflow on exogenous glucose use, performance, and GI responses.

Background: Effective nutritional support is essential for maintaining good performance during exercise. Taste and olfaction are key senses for food intake, and understanding how their sensitivities change during exercise is important for effective nutritional support. However, the effects of exercise on taste and odor sensitivities remain unclear.

Lipid serve as a crucial energy source during prolonged endurance exercise, and whey protein isolate (WPI) is commonly applied in food emulsions to modulate lipid digestibility. Herein, we prepared WPI short fibrils, <400 nm in length, to stabilize emulsion and increase lipid digestion and absorption rates. Specifically, a 2 % (w/v) WPI solution was adjusted to pH 2 and heated at 90 °C for 6 h to produce long fibrils, followed by 168 h of shear force treatment to obtain short fibrils.
