Candida albicans cells of opposite mating types are thought to conjugate during infection in mammalian hosts, but paradoxically, the mating-competent opaque state is not stable at mammalian body temperatures. We found that anaerobic conditions stabilize the opaque state at 37 degrees C, block production of farnesol, and permit in vitro mating at 37 degrees C at efficiencies of up to 84%. Aerobically, farnesol prevents mating because it kills the opaque cells necessary for mating, and as a corollary, farnesol production is turned off in opaque cells. These in vitro observations suggest that naturally anaerobic sites, such as the efficiently colonized gastrointestinal (GI) tract, could serve as niches for C. albicans mating. In a direct test of mating in the mouse GI tract, prototrophic cells were obtained from auxotrophic parent cells, confirming that mating will occur in this organ. These cells were true mating products because they were tetraploid, mononuclear, and prototrophic, and they contained the heterologous hisG marker from one of the parental strains.

The Thorny Skate (Amblyraja radiata) is a vulnerable species displaying a discrete size-polymorphism in the northwest Atlantic Ocean (NWA). We conducted whole genome sequencing of samples collected across its range. Genetic diversity was similar at all sampled sites, but we discovered a ~ 31 megabase bi-allelic supergene associated with the size polymorphism, with the larger size allele having introgressed in the last ~160,000 years B.

: The aim of this study was to evaluate the abrasive wear of the sliding screw-rod joint used in growth guidance system (GGS) stabilizers, allowing for the translation of the screw along the rod during the spinal growth process in a standard and modified system. : The study used single kinematic screw-rod pairs made of titanium alloy Ti6Al4V. Mechanical tests (cyclic loads) simulated the stabilizer's operation under conditions similar to actual use.

The great diversity of specialist plant-feeding insects suggests that host plant shifts may initiate speciation, even without geographic barriers. Pheromones and kairomones mediate sexual communication and host choice, and the response to these behaviour-modifying chemicals is under sexual and natural selection, respectively. The concept that the interaction of mate signals and habitat cues facilitates reproductive isolation and ecological speciation is well established, while the traits and the underlying sensory mechanisms remain unknown.

Wnt7a-Cre is a commonly used for generating uterine epithelial conditional knockout mice, such as epiERα-/- (Esr1f/-Wnt7aCre/+) and epiPR-/- (Pgrf/-Wnt7aCre/+). We noticed that epiERα-/- females, but not epiPR-/- females, have prolonged plugging latency, which is the duration between continuous cohabitation and detection of the first vaginal plug (a sign of mating). Mating occurs in proestrus and/or estrus stages of the estrous cycle.

Once perceived, these cues may in turn affect the internal state and behavioral responses of listening animals. Using the CBA/CAJ mouse model of acoustic communication, this study examined acoustic cues that signal intensity in male-female interactions, then compared behavioral responses to intense mating vocal sequences with those from another intense behavioral context, restraint.
