Between 1965 and 1968, about 350 workers were accidentally exposed to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) in a chemical plant, which was producing herbicides based on the trichlorophenoxyacetic acid. About 80 workers developed signs of poisoning. The estimated mean concentration of TCDD at the time of exposure was about 5000 pg/g of plasma fat. Only 15 subjects from the original cohort remained available for the recent follow-up in 2004. All were men, mean age 60 years. The mean current TCDD plasma concentration was 128 pg/g. Neurological examination revealed some CNS impairment in eight subjects. Signs of polyneuropathy were found in nine subjects, confirmed by NCV studies in three cases. Electroencephalography was abnormal in three cases; Visual-evoked potential in five cases. Acquired dyschromatopsia was detected in six patients. SPECT showed focal reduction of perfusion in various brain locations in all but one patient. Two neuropsychological variables and the frequency of abnormal neurophysiological tests in individual patients correlated with TCDD plasma level. The findings support the hypothesis that TCDD can damage the nervous system. In addition to a direct neurotoxic effect of TCDD, changes secondary to vasculopathy should be considered, in the pathophysiology of the damage, because of the high frequency of lipid metabolism disorders and their complications.

Polybrominated dibenzofurans (PBDFs) are major brominated dioxins in the environment, but information on their bioaccumulation potential and toxicokinetics is limited. This study conducted oral exposure experiments with C57BL/6J mice to investigate the uptake ratios, distribution in the liver, plasma and brain, metabolism, and elimination kinetics of four bromine/chlorine-substituted dibenzofurans (TrBDF: 2,3,8-tribromo, TeBDF: 2,3,7,8-tetrabromo, PeBDF: 1,2,3,7,8-pentabromo, TrBCDF: 2,3,7-tribromo-8-chloro) in comparison with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). The hepatic uptake ratios of 2,3,7,8-substituted dibenzofurans were lower than that of TCDD (up to 84% of the administered doses) and decreased with the number of Br substitutions (42%, 33%, and 29% for TrBCDF, TeBDF, and PeBDF, respectively).

Humoral responses to respiratory viruses, such as influenza viruses, develop over time and are central to protection from repeated infection with the same or similar viruses. Epidemiological and experimental studies have linked exposures to environmental contaminants that bind the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) with modulated antibody responses to pathogenic microorganisms and common vaccinations. Other studies have prompted investigation into the potential therapeutic applications of compounds that activate AHR.

Development of efficient catalysts for non-thermal plasma (NTP) assisted catalysis to mitigate the formation of harmful by-products is a significant challenge in the degradation of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (Cl-VOCs). In this study, catalytically active Pt nanoparticles supported on non-porous SiO2 and silicalite-1 zeolites (S1) with different pore structure were comparatively investigated for catalytic chlorobenzene degradation under NTP condition. It was shown that the pore structure could significantly impact the metal size and metal dispersion rate.

Dimethylmonothioarsinic acid (DMMTA), a pentavalent thio-arsenic derivative, has been found in bodily fluids and tissues including urine, liver, kidney homogenates, plasma, and red blood cells. Although DMMTA is a minor metabolite in humans and animals, its substantial toxicity raises concerns about potential carcinogenic effects. This toxicity could be attributed to arsenicals' ability to regulate cytochrome P450 1 A (CYP1A) enzymes, pivotal in procarcinogen activation or detoxification.
