Combining ability status of the inbred lines is crucial information for hybrid breeding program. Diallel or line × tester mating designs are frequently used to evaluate the combining ability. In the current study a modified diallel model was used, wherein the Griffing's combining ability effects were further partitioned to understand the effects due to maternal and reciprocal.

This chapter presents a genotyping assay that uses DNA isolated from axenic cultures of Cryphonectria parasitica, which discriminates the six known diallelic vic loci and the two mating idiomorphs (MAT gene) based on (i) modified primer, labeled with a fluorescent dye, (ii) multiplex polymerase chain reaction (multiplex-PCR), and (iii) capillary electrophoresis system. Alternatively, we show that the same primer set is suitable for conventional PCR of each vic locus and MAT gene using nonmodified primer and agarose gel electrophoresis.

Reproductive parasites such as spread within host populations by inducing cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI). CI occurs when parasite-modified sperm fertilizes uninfected eggs and is typified by great variation in strength across biological systems. In haplodiploid hosts, CI has different phenotypic outcomes depending on whether the fertilized eggs die or develop into males.

Examining the Inheritance of Watermelon Fruit Traits by Hayman's Graphical Approach.

Biomed Res Int

Department of Biotechnology, Institute of Science and High Technology and Environmental Sciences, Graduate University of Advanced Technology, Kerman, Iran.

Watermelon traits such as yield and other agronomic traits are highly environmentally sensitive and regulated by multiple genes; therefore, by understanding the genetic structure, the heritability and genetic influence of different traits can improve them. Five watermelon lines were crossed in a 5 × 5 full diallel parental design to estimate the genetic effect and heritability of fruit traits. Treatments were evaluated on the farm using a random complete block design.

Dwarfism, also known as growth hormone deficiency (GHD), is a disease caused by genetic mutations that result in either a lack of growth hormone or insufficient secretion of growth hormone, resulting in a person's inability to grow normally. In the past, many studies focusing on GHD have made use of models of other diseases such as metabolic or infectious diseases. A viable GHD specific model system has not been used previously, thus limiting the interpretation of GHD results.
