Background: Orange maize genotypes are sources of provitamin A (PVA) carotenoids, which are precursors of vitamin A. PVA deficiency and drought constitute major challenges causing increasing food and nutritional insecurity in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Breeding of drought-tolerant provitamin A hybrid maize can mitigate these challenges.

Carotenoid pathways exist in nature in all domains. Comparison of the genes involved and their distribution allowed the elucidation of the origin and evolution of carotenoid biosynthesis from an early common ancestor of prokaryotes to Bacteria and Archaea. From the latter domain, carotenogenic genes are inherited by fungi as the only phylum of Eukarya.

This study aimed to analyze Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) parameters and Macular Pigment Optical Density (MPOD) changes in patients affected by Retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Eighteen eyes of 18 patients suffering from early-stage RP were enrolled in our observational study. 18 eyes of 18 patients age and gender matched were enrolled as controls.

In this study, we investigated the protective effects of astaxanthin (AST) against oxidative stress induced by the combination of azoxymethane (AOM) and dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in colitis-associated cancer (CAC) and TNF-α-induced human colorectal cancer cells (SW480), as well as the underlying mechanism. In vitro experiments revealed that astaxanthin reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and inhibited the expression of Phosphorylated JNK (P-JNK), Phosphorylated ERK (P-ERK), Phosphorylated p65 (P-p65), and the NF-κB downstream protein cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). In vivo experiments showed that astaxanthin ameliorated AOM/DSS-induced weight loss, shortened the colon length, and caused histomorphological changes.

Osteopetrosis-like disorders induced by osteoblast-specific retinoic acid signaling inhibition in mice.

Osteopetrosis is an inherited metabolic disease, characterized by increased bone density and narrow marrow cavity. Patients with severe osteopetrosis exhibit abnormal bone brittleness, anemia, and infection complications, which commonly cause death within the first decade of life. Pathologically, osteopetrosis impairs not only the skeletal system, but also the hemopoietic and immune systems during development, while the underlying osteoimmunological mechanisms remain unclear.
