The condition of immune homeostasis was studied in 100 patients with chronic renal failure (CRF), including 70 patients on hemodialysis. The patients displayed disbalance in the immune homeostasis characterized by a decrease in the number of CD3+, CD4+, and CD72+ cells, and phagocytosis intensification. Priority Th1-cell response of the immune system tends to intensify during the pre-dialysis period of CRF and becomes the most prominent at the terminal stage.

Background: Knowledge of the complex interplay between gut microbiota and human health is gradually increasing as it has just recently been a field of such great interest.
Summary: Recent studies have reported that communities of microorganisms inhabiting the gut influence the immune system through cellular responses and shape many physiological and pathophysiological aspects of the body, including muscle and bone metabolism (formation and resorption). Specifically, the gut microbiota affects skeletal homeostasis through changes in host metabolism, the immune system, hormone secretion, and the gut-brain axis.

There is growing concern that exposure to per/polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), persistent chemicals used widely to make consumer products water- or grease-proof, may alter immune function, leading to reduced vaccine response or greater susceptibility to infections. We investigated associations between two legacy PFAS (PFOA and PFOS) and infant cytokine levels measured in newborn dried bloodspots (NDBS) from a large population-based birth cohort in Upstate New York, to determine whether exposure to legacy PFAS is associated with variability in cytokine profiles in newborns. We performed adjusted mixed effects regressions for each cytokine against PFOS and PFOA followed by exploratory factor analysis (EFA) on specific cytokine subsets selected via the prior regressions.

Background: A recent study conducted by the laboratory of the first author revealed that major depression is composed of two distinct subtypes: major dysmood disorder (MDMD) and simple dysmood disorder (SDMD). The latter is a less severe phenotype with fewer aberrant biological pathways. MDMD, but not SDMD, patients were identified to have highly sensitized cytokine/growth factor networks using stimulated whole blood cultures.

Sarcopenia and hepatic encephalopathy (HE) are complications of chronic liver disease (CLD), which negatively impact clinical outcomes. Hyperammonemia is considered to be the central component in the pathogenesis of HE, however ammonia's toxic effects have also been shown to impinge on extracerebral organs including the muscle. Our aim was to investigate the effect of attenuating hyperammonemia with ornithine phenylacetate (OP) on muscle mass loss and associated molecular mechanisms in rats with CLD.

The study of nutritional compounds with the potential to train the innate immune response has implications for human health. The objective of the current study was to discover by what means 6 weeks of oral baker's yeast beta glucan (BYBG) supplementation altered the mRNA expression of genes that reflect innate immune training in the absence of a physical stressor. Nineteen adults were randomly assigned to either a Wellmune BYBG or Placebo for 6 weeks.
