In the present study we have evaluated the Fluorescein Diacetate/Ethidium Bromide (FDA/EB) staining technique to assess the viability of Mycobacterium leprae obtained from biopsies of leprosy patients under different periods of treatment. Bacillary suspensions were obtained from skin punch biopsies and stained with the FDA/EB solution. The average percentage of green cells seen which were deemed to be viable were: 67.2% of green cells in patients without previous treatment; 45.6% in patients with 1 to 6 months of treatment; 25.9% for patients with 7 to 12 months of treatment and 10.5% in patients with 13 to 24 months of treatment. All the patients studied were on multidrug therapy. The differences obtained in the percentages of green cells in the different groups of patients were statistically significant as determined by the Wilcoxon's test. The decrease in the percentage of green cells observed with increasing periods of treatment suggests that the FDA/EB technique correlates with the actual viability of M. leprae. The application of this technique in the routine procedures performed with Hansen's disease patients could be very useful for monitoring the effectiveness of treatment in leprosy patients.

The increasing demand for natural alternatives to synthetic fungicides has prompted research into natural products like essential oils for postharvest disease management. This study investigated the antifungal, antioxidant, cytotoxic, and genotoxic potential of essential oil mixtures derived from oregano, rosemary, and mint against Penicillium digitatum, the predominant fungal pathogen causing green mold in orange fruits. Introduction: Hypericin (HP), a natural photosensitizer, has demonstrated great efficacy in photodynamic therapy (PDT) for cancer treatment. In addition to the induction of apoptosis and necrosis through reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, the therapeutic mechanisms and targets of PDT-HP remain unknown.
Objectives: To investigate the direct targets and mechanisms of action of photoactivated hypericin in the inhibition of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC).

Oxidative damage, oxidative inflammation, and a range of downstream diseases represent significant threats to human health. The application of natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents can help prevent and mitigate these associated diseases. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effectiveness of walnut green husk (WNGH) as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent in an in vitro setting.

In the context of climate changing environments, microalgae can be excellent organisms to understand molecular mechanisms that activate survival strategies under stress. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii signalling mutants are extremely useful to decipher which strategies photosynthetic organisms use to cope with changeable environments. The mutant vip1-1 has an altered profile of pyroinositol polyphosphates (PP-InsPs), which are signalling molecules present in all eukaryotes and have been connected to P signalling in other organisms including plants, but their implications in other nutrient signalling are still under evaluation.

Euglenids are flagellates with diverse modes of nutrition, including the photosynthetic Euglenophyceae, which acquired plastids via secondary endosymbiosis with green algae, and a diverse assemblage of predators of bacteria and other microeukaryotes. Most heterotrophic euglenids have never been cultivated, so their morphology remains poorly characterized and limited to only a few studies. "Ploeotids" are a paraphyletic group representing much of the diversity of heterotrophic euglenids and are characterized by their feeding apparatus and a rigid pellicle of 10-12 longitudinally arranged strips.
