Background: Besides total triiodothyronine (TT3), total free fatty acids (FFA) concentrations were higher with serum separator tube (SST) than Vacuette tubes.

Methods: The effects of surfactant, rubber stopper, and separator gel from various tubes were investigated on FFA, beta-hydroxybutyrate (beta-HB), and TT3 with 8 different tube types in blood specimens of apparently healthy volunteers.

Results: Compared to Vacuette tubes, serum FFA and TT3 concentrations were significantly higher in SST than glass tubes. Reformulated SST eliminated the increase in TT3 but not FFA. No significant difference was observed for beta-HB concentration among tube types. Surfactant and rubber stoppers from the different tube types significantly increased TT3 but not FFA and beta-HB concentrations. Agitation of whole blood but not serum or plasma specimens with separator gel from SST, reformulated SST and plasma preparation tube (PPT) tubes compared to Vacuette tubes gave higher FFA but not beta-HB levels.

Conclusions: Unidentified component(s) from the separator gel in SST, reformulated SST and PPT tubes cause falsely high FFA concentration. In contrast to TT3, falsely high FFA results require exposure of whole blood and not serum to tube constituent(s). The approach employed here may serve as a model for assessing interference(s) from tube constituent(s).

The self-assembly process is governed by the individual constituents of molecules through precise non-covalent interactions. Amphiphilic cyanines are intriguing in supramolecular chemistry due to the large polarizability of their delocalized π-electron systems, their tuneable optical properties and their ability to form well-defined self-assembled structures in different media. Here we present the synthesis of a novel tetrahydroxy amphiphilic carbocyanine dye with perfluoro alkylated chains -(CH)-(CF)-CF as hydrophobic segments and aminoproanediol as hydrophilic segment.

Centre for Nano and Material Sciences, Jain University, Jain Global Campus, Kanakapura, Ramanagaram, Bangalore 562112, India.

Article Synopsis
  • There is a pressing need for a sensitive and quick method to detect ketamine and scopolamine, commonly used in drug-facilitated sexual assaults.
  • Researchers developed electrochemical sensors using N-heterocyclic carbene-coordinated ruthenium polymers combined with multi-walled carbon nanotubes, achieving high sensitivities for both drugs.
  • The sensors demonstrate remarkable selectivity and low detection limits, making them promising tools for on-site detection in forensic investigations of date rape drugs.

Background: The recurrent nature and socioeconomic burden of nephrolithiasis demand effective treatments. Delineating the crosstalk between inflammatory processes and the endogenous oxalate metabolism pathway, which underpins nephrolithiasis pathogenesis, is essential for advancing treatment strategies.

Purpose: We aim to screen therapeutic Chinese herbal remedies and their bioactive constituents for kidney stone treatment using a fruit fly model, followed by efficacy and mechanism validation in a rodent nephrolithiasis model as well as in vitro human cell culture model.

State Key Laboratory of Animal Nutrition and Feeding, Institute of Animal Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Haidian District, Beijing 100193, China.

The authentication of milk and dairy products has great significance for food fraud. The present investigation entailed the development of a novel method that amalgamates the double-tube approach with multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology, incorporating TaqMan probes, to facilitate the high-throughput screening and detection of animal-derived constituents within milk and dairy products. Eight dairy-derived animal-specific primers and probes were designed for the mitochondrial () gene of eight dairy products, including cow, buffalo, yak, goat, sheep, horse, donkey, and camel.

The pervasive use of plastics in numerous industrial sectors has resulted in the circulation of microplastics across diverse ecosystems and food chains, giving rise to mounting concerns regarding their potential adverse impacts on biological systems and the environment. The objective of this experiment was to investigate the distinct effects of microplastic-polyvinyl chloride (PVC) exposure on the reproductive system, intestinal tissue structure, and intestinal microbial flora of both male and female mice. A total of 24 4-week-old Kunming mice were randomly assigned to one of four groups: male control group (CM), female control group (CF), male PVC test group (PVCM), and female PVC test group (PVCF) (n = 6).
