Objectives: This paper examines the pitfalls that arise when an outlier is assessed using a criterion based on a fixed multiple of the standard deviation rather than an established statistical test. Although the former approach is statistically invalid, it is the favored method for identifying outliers in Ontario laboratory quality control protocols.
Design And Methods: Computer simulations are used to calculate the probability of a false positive result (classifying a valid observation as an outlier) when outlier criteria based on fixed multiples of the standard deviation are applied to samples containing no outliers.
Results: The estimated probability of a false positive result is tabulated over various sample sizes. Outlier criteria based on fixed multiples of the standard deviation are shown to be highly inefficient.
Conclusions: This work presents arguments for discontinuing the widespread practice of using outlier criteria based on fixed multiples of the standard deviation to identify outliers in univariate samples.

The age estimation by tooth cementum thickness is a method that has been discussed regarding its applicability. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review on the use of tooth cementum thickness as a biomarker for age estimation in adults, as well as a meta-analysis to assess the method's reliability. The search was conducted on Embase, LILACS, PubMed/MEDLINE, SciELO, Scopus, and Web of Science databases.

This study aimed to estimate a socio-spatial vulnerability index for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) at the municipal level in Mexico for 2020. It incorporated factors such as poverty, social backwardness, marginalization index, and human development index. This retrospective ecological study analyzed 317,011 incident cases of T2DM in 2020.

Uganda's only radiotherapy center is a very busy facility treating about 210 patients daily on three linear accelerators making it sometimes hard to have machine time for pretreatment QAs. This study was aimed at validating an independent calculation software, ClearCalc (ICS) for second checks of the treatment planning system (TPS) calculations. The validation of ICS started with simple phantom test plans consisting of square, irregular, open and wedged fields designed in the TPS and measured in phantoms.
