In RNA interference (RNAi), long double-stranded RNA is cleaved by the Dicer endonuclease into small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), which guide degradation of complementary RNAs. While RNAi mediates antiviral innate immunity in plants and many invertebrates, vertebrates have adopted a sequence-independent response and their Dicer produces siRNAs inefficiently because it is adapted to process small hairpin microRNA precursors in the gene-regulating microRNA pathway. Mammalian endogenous RNAi is thus a rudimentary pathway of unclear significance.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are essential components of innate immunity, maintaining the functionality of immune systems that control virus infection. However, how lncRNAs engage immune responses during influenza A virus (IAV) infection remains unclear. Here, we show that lncRNA USP30-AS1 is up-regulated by infection of multiple different IAV subtypes and is required for tuning inflammatory and antiviral response in IAV infection.

Problem: Aging alters immune function in women and can lead increased risk of infections, particularly in the female reproductive tract (FRT).
Method Of Study: To determine how aging affects innate immune responses in the cervical stroma of the FRT, we isolated endocervical (CX) and ectocervical (ECX) stromal fibroblasts and determine if their expression of multiple pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) and responses to viral stimulation varied with menopause and age.
Results: Constitutive expression of most PRRs did not vary with age or menopausal status in either cell type.

Heligmosomoides polygyrus co-infection is reported to have protective antiviral effects against pulmonary viral infections. To investigate a potential underlying mechanism, we infected C57BL/6 mice with H. polygyrus larvae for two weeks.

The female genital tract (FGT) serves as a primary site of HIV acquisition, but gaps in knowledge remain regarding protective innate immune mechanisms. Innate lymphoid cells are tissue-resident cells involved in mucosal barrier maintenance and protection, and innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) are altered during chronic HIV infection.
