The insect order of Hymenoptera (ants, bees, sawflies, and wasps) consists almost entirely of haplodiploid species. Under haplodiploidy, males develop from unfertilized eggs and are haploid, whereas females develop from fertilized eggs and are diploid. Although diploid males commonly occur, haploid females have never been reported. In analyzing the phenomenon of gynandromorphism in the parasitoid wasp Nasonia vitripennis, we found a line that generates complete phenotypic females from unfertilized eggs. These females have ovaries, can lay eggs, and are haploid, as shown by cytological and flow cytometric analyses. The data show that diploidy is not necessary for female development.

Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) are commonly used to address human infertility and to boost livestock production. During ART, procedures such as in vitro fertilization, artificial insemination, and intracytoplasmic sperm injection introduce gametes and embryos to unnatural and potentially stressful conditions that can influence offspring health, often via epigenetic effects. In this perspective we summarize these key risks of ART for embryonic and longer-term offspring fitness, emphasizing the need for experimental research on animal models to determine causal links between ART and offspring fitness across multiple generations.

In patients with mosaic Turner syndrome, the ovarian somatic cells (granulosa and stromal cells) display a high level of aneuploidy with a 45,X karyotype, which may affect gene expression in the ovary and contribute to their reduced fertility. The aim of the current research is to study the effect of aneuploidy of somatic ovarian cells on gene expression in ovarian cortex stromal cells and small ovarian follicles from mosaic (45,X/46,XX) Turner syndrome patients. Restoration of haploid female and haploid male fertility without colchicine is feasible. Three SNPs and eight gene models for HFF, and one SNP and a gene model for HMF were identified.
