Background: Females are generally less prone to cardiovascular (CV) events than males, but this protection is trumped by diabetes. The mechanism behind the increased relative risk in females with diabetes is not fully understood. Insulin resistance (IR) is suggested to be a more important contributor to CV morbidity in females than in males.

The complex biology of aryl hydrocarbon receptor activation in cancer and beyond.

Biochem Pharmacol

October 2023

Molecular Epidemiology Unit, Berlin Institute of Health at Charité and the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK), Partner Site Berlin, a partnership between DKFZ and Charité -Universitätsmedizin Berlin, 10117 Berlin, Germany.

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) signaling pathway is a complex regulatory network that plays a critical role in various biological processes, including cellular metabolism, development, and immune responses. The complexity of AHR signaling arises from multiple factors, including the diverse ligands that activate the receptor, the expression level of AHR itself, and its interaction with the AHR nuclear translocator (ARNT). Additionally, the AHR crosstalks with the AHR repressor (AHRR) or other transcription factors and signaling pathways and it can also mediate non-genomic effects.

Promising utility of using serial ctDNA in metastatic colorectal cancer to both refine patient selection, reduce toxicity due to chemotherapy, and to evaluate emerging resistance mechanisms may lead the way to novel therapeutic strategies. However, important questions remain in validating its use as a predictive biomarker of treatment response. See related article by Vidal et al.

Aim: Lower grade gliomas [LGGs; World Health Organization (WHO) grades 2 and 3], owing to the heterogeneity of their clinical behavior, present a therapeutic challenge to neurosurgeons. The aim of this study was to explore the N6-methyladenosine (mA) modification landscape in the LGGs and to develop an mA-related microRNA (miRNA) risk model to provide new perspectives for the treatment and prognostic assessment of LGGs.

Methods: Messenger RNA (mRNA) and miRNA expression data of LGGs were extracted from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA) databases.

An innovative form of Fisher ratio (F-ratio) analysis (FRA) is developed for use with comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-TOFMS) data and applied to the investigation of the changes in the metabolome in human plasma for patients with injury to their anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Specifically, FRA provides a supervised discovery of metabolites that express a statistically significant variance in a two-sample class comparison: patients and healthy controls. The standard F-ratio utilizes the between-class variance relative to the pooled within-class variance.
