High-output enterocutaneous fistulas involving an open abdominal wound are a difficult management problem. We report our experience on the use of vacuum dressings. The potential benefits, problems and new recommendations for the use of vacuum dressings in the management of enterocutaneous fistulas are discussed.

Background: Although the effective application of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) has been exemplified in diverse clinical studies, its potential and safety, specifically regarding paediatric burns, are yet to be fully confirmed. Our most recent systematic review and meta-analysis strive to investigate the impact of NPWT within the realm of paediatric burns.

Methods: We sourced relevant articles from databases including PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Database, Web of Science, the International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, China National Knowledge Infrastructureris, the VIP Database for Chinese Technical Periodicals, and the Wanfang database.

Thiolated chitosan (Cs-SH) nanoparticles were synthesized and incorporated into bacterial cellulose (BC) membranes through vacuum-assisted confinement. Thiolation significantly enhanced the intrinsic adhesion capacity of chitosan (Cs) as well as its solubility in neutral aqueous solutions. Subsequently, Cs-SH nanoparticles were successfully loaded with curcumin (Cur-Cs-SH), with nanoparticle sizes of 121 ± 2 nm for Cs-SH and 152 ± 6 nm for Cur-Cs-SH.

Primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma (pcALCL) is a CD30+ lymphoproliferative disorder with generally favorable outcomes and infrequent extracutaneous spread, usually limited to local lymph nodes. However, there may be extensive histologic overlap with more aggressive CD30+ lymphomas, such as large cell transformation of mycosis fungoides or secondary skin involvement by anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-negative anaplastic large cell lymphoma. Definitive diagnosis relies on clinicopathologic correlation.

COMPARISON OF NEGATIVE PRESSURE VACUUM THERAPY (NPWT) AND TIE OVER DRESSING IN HEALING SKIN GRAFTS.

J Ayub Med Coll Abbottabad

November 2024

Department of Plastic Surgery, PNS Shifa, Karachi-Pakistan.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study compares the effectiveness of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) with traditional tie over dressing in securing skin grafts, focusing on wound healing and complications.
  • - Conducted at a Karachi hospital, the randomized control trial involved patients who were assigned to either NPWT or tie over dressing, assessing their wounds after a set period.
  • - Results showed NPWT significantly improved graft success and reduced complications like infection and hematoma compared to tie over dressing, with many NPWT patients experiencing no issues at all.
