Objective: To study the serum leptin level and insulin resistance on sustained virological response (SVR) in patients with chronic hepatitis C and to evaluate whether serum leptin level and insulin resistance are independent risk factors.

Methods: Forty chronic hepatitis C patients were treated with interferon (alpha-2a) 5 MU and ribavirin 1.0 g for 24 weeks. The fasting serum leptin, insulin, glucose, HCV RNA load, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were measured and the insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR: homeostasis model of assessment) and body mass index (BMI) were calculated. Statistical methods used were univariate analyses and multivariable regression analyses.

Results: Of the 40 patients, 23 patients (57.5%) had a sustained virological response and 17 patients (42.5%) had a non-sustained virological response. Patients with a sustained virological response had lower serum leptin, HOMA-IR and BMI. Their SVR was associated with age, HCV RNA loads, serum leptin level, and insulin resistance, when analyzed with univariate analyses. SVR was not associated with sex, ALT, or AST. With multivariable regression analyses, serum leptin level and insulin resistance were found to be independent prediction factors for SVR in chronic hepatitis C patients with antivirus treatment.

Conclusion: Serum leptin level and insulin resistance were associated with SVR in chronic hepatitis C patients; they were independent prediction factors for SVR.

Unlabelled: LCN2 has an osteokine important for appetite regulation; in type 2 diabetes (T2D) it is not known whether appetite regulation mediated by LCN2 in the brain is altered. In this work, we focus on exploring the role of blocking LCN2 in metabolic health and appetite regulation within the central nervous system of mice with T2D.

Material And Methods: 4-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were used, divided into four experimental groups: intact, T2D, TD2/anti-LCN2, and T2D/IgG as isotype control.

Background: While premature ejaculation (PE) can be divided into lifelong PE (LPE), acquired PE, natural variable PE (NPE), and subjective PE (SPE), there is no objective method to classify PE.

Aim: To determine the value of serum serotonin (5-HT), leptin, and norepinephrine (NE) levels in the classification of PE.

Methods: From July 2023 to July 2024, we recruited 150 participants and divided them into 4 groups: LPE (43 cases), NPE (32 cases), SPE (35 cases), and non-PE (40 cases) groups.

This meta-analysis aims to compile all randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that examined the effects of grapes or grape products on adult anthropometric measures and serum adipokines. We searched PubMed, Scopus, Google scholar, Web of Science and CENTRAL databases published before January 2022. Random-effects model was used to combine mean differences between intervention and placebo groups.

Background: Leptin is a hormone which is secreted by the adipocytes. In the circulation, leptin levels are directly proportional to the body fat percentage. Studies have shown that higher leptin levels are associated with an increased risk of hypertension after adjusting for body mass index (BMI).

Quantitative determination of leptin hormone using gold nanoparticle-based lateral flow assay.

Mikrochim Acta

January 2025

Science and Technology Research and Application Center (BITAM), Necmettin Erbakan University, Konya, Türkiye.

A lateral flow assay (LFA) has been developed that can be used in point-of-care (PoC) use for the sensitive determination of leptin hormone. The limit of detection value was 0.158 ng/mL and the limit of quantification value was 0.
