A continuous flow configuration is proposed for the estimation of the hydrocarbon index in soils using for the first time evaporative light scattering detection (ELSD). The method is based on a membrane-enrichment of the hydrocarbons of interest (C10-C40), which are previously extracted from the soil matrix with a water:hexane mixture using a household microwave oven. The organic supernatant is cleaned-up through silica, evaporated and redissolved in a sodium dodecyl sulphate aqueous solution which is introduced in the loop of an injection valve. The sample, carried by an aqueous stream, passes through a continuous filtration unit fitted with a 1 microm pore size PTFE membrane, where the hydrocarbons are retained while the potential coextracted compounds are wasted. Quantitative elution of the C10-C40 fraction is accomplished by passing an acetone stream through the filter which drives the analytes to the ELSD system for analytical measurement. The detection limit was 1.8 microg ml(-1), the linear range 5-25 microg ml(-1) and the precision 4.3%. The recoveries were between 93 and 97%. The proposed method was also evaluated by attenuated total reflexion-Fourier transform (ATR-FT-IR) analysis of the extracts.

Background: Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) and fibrinolytic or thrombolytic therapy are common treatments for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Primary percutaneous coronary intervention is more effective than thrombolytic therapy, but fibrinolytic therapy is still a preferable option for patients with limited access to healthcare. Alteplase is a tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) used to treat acute myocardial infarction, acute ischemic stroke, and pulmonary embolism.

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology has received increased interest as a suitable approach for treating wastewater while producing electricity. However, there remains a lack of studies investigating the impact of inoculum type and hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the efficiency of MFCs in treating industrial saline wastewater. The effect of three different inocula (activated sludge from a fish-canning industry and two domestic wastewater treatment plants, WWTPs) on electrochemical and physicochemical parameters and the anodic microbiome of a two-chambered continuous-flow MFC was studied.

Protein synthesis is by far the most energetically costly cellular process in rapidly dividing cells. Quantifying translating ribosomes in individual cells and their average mRNA transit rate is arduous. Quantitating assembled ribosomes in individual cells requires electron microscopy and does not indicate ribosome translation status.

Background: A partial atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD) with a hypoplastic left ventricle and common atrium is a rare combination of cardiac anomalies that can be associated with Ellis-van Creveld (EVC) syndrome.

Case Summary: A female neonate with EVC syndrome was diagnosed with an unbalanced AVSD and hypoplastic left ventricle. Pulmonary artery banding and ductus ligation were performed at 23 days after birth.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a long-term condition characterised by increased resistance to blood flow in the pulmonary circulation. The disease has a progressive course and is associated with a poor prognosis. Without treatment, PAH is associated with mortality in <3 years.
