A laser ablation-molecular beam/reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometric technique was used to investigate the ion-molecule reactions that proceed within Ti+(ROH)n (R = C2H5, CF3CH2) heterocluster ions. The mass spectra exhibit a major sequence of cluster ions with the formula Ti+(OR)m(ROH)n (m = 1, 2), which is attributed to sequential insertions of Ti+ into the O-H bond of C2H5OH or CF3CH2OH molecules within the heteroclusters, followed by H eliminations. The TiO+ and TiOH+ ions produced from the reactions of Ti+ with C2H5OH are interpreted as arising from insertion of Ti+ into the C-O bond, followed by C2H5 and C2H6 eliminations, respectively. When Ti+ reacted with CF3CH2OH, by contrast, considerable contributions from TiFOH+, TiF2+, and TiF2OH+ ions were observed in the mass spectrum of the reaction products, indicating that F and OH abstractions are the dominant product channels. Ab initio calculations of the complex of Ti+ with 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol show that the minimum energy structure is that in which Ti+ is attached to the O atom and one of the three F atoms of 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol, forming a five-membered ring. Isotope-labeling experiments additionally show that the chemical reactivity of heterocluster ions is greatly influenced by the presence of fluorine substituents and cluster size. The reaction energetics and formation mechanisms of the observed heterocluster ions are discussed.

Chlorine dioxide: An exception that proves the rules of localized chemical bonding.

J Chem Phys

March 2022

Theoretical Chemistry Institute and Department of Chemistry, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, Wisconsin 53705, USA.

We employ natural bond orbital and natural resonance theory tools to analyze the enigmatic properties of the C-symmetric isomer of chlorine dioxide radical (ClO), whose many challenges to Pauling-type localized bonding concepts were recognized by Linus Pauling himself. Although spin-contamination is minimal in this species, ClO exhibits an unusually strong form of "different Lewis structures for different spins" bonding pattern, intrinsically outside the framework of "maximal pairing" concepts. We show how the novel spin-unpaired donor-acceptor interactions lead to weakened bonding in the supramolecular domain of polyradical (ClO) homoclusters and aqueous ClO(HO) heteroclusters.

Formation of deaminated dimer species of amino acids by atmospheric pressure chemical ionization.

Rapid Commun Mass Spectrom

April 2014

Department of Chemistry, Sejong University, 98 Gunja-dong, Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, 143-747, Korea.

Rationale: Interactions of biological molecules to form cluster species play a key role in biological processes and investigation of non-covalent complexes is one of the research fields using mass spectrometry. Atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (APCI-MS) is a useful method for the investigation of cluster formation of amino acids (AAs) by ion-molecule reactions.

Methods: A mixture of 20 protein AAs was ionized by APCI and the product ions were analyzed.

Reactions occurring within gas phase fluorobenenze-ammonia heterocluster cations (FC(6)H(5)-(NH(3))(n=1-4)) have been studied through the use of a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer as well as employing density functional theory (DFT). Collision induced dissociation (CID) experiments were conducted in which mass selected cluster ions are accelerated into a cell containing argon gas and the resulting products then subsequently mass analyzed. Two dominate reaction channels are observed.

The intrinsic methylating abilities of the known biological methylating zwitterionic agents, dimethylsulfonioacetate (DMSA), (CH(3))(2)S⁺CH(2)CO(2)(-) (1) and glycine betaine (GB), (CH(3))(3)N⁺CH(2)CO(2)(-) (2), have been examined via a range of gas phase experiments involving collision-induced dissociation (CID) of their proton-bound homo- and heterodimers, including those containing the amino acid arginine. The relative yields of the products of methyl cation transfer are consistent in all cases and show that protonated DMSA is a more potent methylating agent than protonated GB. Since methylation can occur at more than one site in arginine, the [M+CH(3)](+) ion of arginine, formed from the heterocluster [DMSA+Arg+H](+), was subject to an additional stage of CID.
