The proliferation and chlorine resistance of pathogenic bacteria in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) pose a serious threat to human health. In this study, the synergistic effects of ozonation pretreatment and trace phosphate on water quality health risk and microbial stability were investigated in the small-scale DWDSs simulated by biofilms annular reactors with cast iron coupons. The results indicated that ozonation of drinking water containing trace phosphate was equivalent to increasing microbial carbon and phosphorus sources, further leading to the rapid proliferation of opportunistic pathogens (OPs) in subsequent DWDSs.

Free-living amoebae (FLA) are prevalent in drinking water distribution networks (DWDNs), yet our understanding of FLA community dynamics and assembly mechanisms in DWDNs remains limited. This study characterized the occurrence patterns of amoeba communities and identified key factors influencing their assembly across four full-scale DWDNs in three Chinese cities, each utilizing different disinfectants (chlorine, chloramine, and chlorine dioxide). High-throughput sequencing of full-length 18S rRNA genes revealed highly diverse FLA communities and an array of rare FLA species in DWDNs.

This study aimed to investigate the presence of SARS-CoV-2, yeasts, and bacteria in isolated free-living amoeba (FLA) from COVID-19 patients. Nasopharyngeal swabs ( = 60) were obtained from COVID-19 patients. After cultivation, morphological characterization, and RNA/DNA extraction, the presence of selected microorganisms was investigated.

To investigate the pathogen species, composition, and distribution characteristics of infectious keratitis pathogens in Shandong Province and its surrounding areas. In this cross-sectional study, patients with keratitis who underwent corneal sampling and microbiological culture at the Shandong Eye Hospital from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2022 were included. Under topical anesthesia, the edge of the lesion was scraped by an experienced physician.
