[Structure: see text] A general, highly efficient and regioselective methoxycarbonylation, by means of a palladium-salicylicborate-catalyzed protocol, of terminal alkyl and aryl olefins is described. The substrates include aliphatic alkenes, allylbenzenes, and styrene derivatives. The yields are very good (60-92%) and the regioselectivity, in favor of the linear ester, is up to quantitative--unprecedented in the case of styrenes.

Succinyldiamide derivatives are important structural motifs in various natural products, pharmaceuticals, and functional materials. Herein, a novel, mild, and environmentally friendly method was developed for synthesizing functionalized succinyldiamides each containing a quaternary carbon center. This strategy was designed to involve photocatalytic decarboxylation of readily available oxalic monoamide using a non-precious metal photocatalyst, 4CzIPN, followed by a free-radical addition/Smiles rearrangement cascade reaction of -aryl--(arylsulfonyl)acrylamides.

Herein we describe a dual photo/cobalt-catalyzed anti-Markovnikov hydroacylation of aryl alkenes using aldehyde as acyl source. The key to success is the cobalt catalyzed hydrogen atom transfer, which enables effective formation of the desired products and efficient regeneration of the photocatalyst under mild conditions. This protocol features broad substrate scopes, good functional group tolerance, high efficiency and regioselectivity.

Novel tetrahydroisoquinoline and piperidine derivatives were selectively synthesized from substituted indenes or cyclopentenes. The process starts with an oxidative cleavage of the ring olefin bond, which gives reactive diformyl intermediates. By a ring-closing step using chiral (R) or (S) α-methylbenzylamine under a reductive amination protocol facilitated ring formation with ring expansion of the corresponding nitrogen-containing heterocycles.
