Purpose: To explore the new technique on the removal of posterior polar intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs).

Methods: Dint of viscoelasticity and cohesiveness of ophthalmic viscoelastics (sodium hyaluronate) was used to wrap, dissociate and suspend IOFBs. Then IOFBs were approached and backsiphoned by using self-made backsiphon syringe needles which were selected according to the size and shape of IOFBs. The IOFBs are removed with the inflow of sodium hyaluronate naturally surging into the needles.

Results: Posterior polar IOFBs in 13 cases (13 eyes) were all removed successfully at one time. There were no accidental injuries or complications. The postoperative vision in 11 cases (11 eyes) was improved, unchanged in 1 case (1 eye) and decreased in 1 case (1 eye).

Conclusions: The technique using viscoelastics to dissociate, suspend and backsiphon IOFBs during the removal of the posterior polar IOFBs can evidently decrease operative difficulty, injury and complications.

Purpose: Henneguya sp. is a crucial myxosporean parasite known to cause milky flesh or tapioca disease in the freshwater fish population, leading to heavy mortality. Studies to investigate its host range and to monitor their prevalence in wild and aquacultured fish are necessary.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the predictive accuracy of a new nephrometry model (RSR) for nephron-sparing surgery in pediatric patients with Wilms tumor, comparing it to existing models.
  • Data from 58 pediatric patients were analyzed, calculating nephrometry scores such as RENAL, PADUA, and SPARE, and the RSR model showed superior predictive performance with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.982.
  • The RSR model not only outperformed the other nephrometry scores significantly but also demonstrated good inter-rater reliability, leading to the development of a user-friendly web-based calculator for its application.

Natural nutshell extract was obtained by mechanical compression. The extract was combined with ethanol and a nonionic surfactant, and it was labeled as EES. The EES inhibitor effect on S135 carbon steel, exposed to a simulated marine-coastal environment (SME), was deduced by mass loss measurement, adsorption isotherm, electrochemical measurements, and surface analysis.

Symmetry is a salient visual feature in the natural world, yet the perception of symmetry may be influenced by how natural lighting conditions (e.g., shading) fall on the object relative to its symmetry axis.
