Purpose: To investigate the protective effect of recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) on retinal ischemic injury induced by raising intraocular pressure.
Methods: Twelve New Zealand rabbits were divided into the model group (n=6) and the EPO group (n=6). Either of bilateral eyes was randomly made into the acutely high intraocular pressure model using the method of saline perfusion into anterior chamber. After the model was made, rhEPO 100 IU x kg(-1) was injected into the hypodermic tissue of EPO group rabbits twice a week for one week. Flash electroretinogram (ERG) was detected 30 min before and at 1, 3, 7, and 14 days after perfusion, respectively.
Results: The amplitude of ERG-b wave had no significant difference in the EPO group compared with that in the model group before anterior chamber perfusion (P > 0.05). The amplitude of ERG-b wave dropped down to the lowest at 1 day after perfusion and could not come back to the baseline in the model group (P < 0.05). The resemble situation was in the EPO group except that the amplitude of ERG-b wave came back to the baseline at 14 days (P > 0.05).
Conclusion: EPO can improve the amplitude of ERG-b wave following retinal ischemia. This indicates that EPO has the potential to be an optimal neuroprotective agent.

This experiment aimed to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) on the growth performance, immune response, and oxygen-transport-related factors of Gibel carp (). An eight-week culturing experiment was designed with five experimental diets, with the actual GABA content being 368 mg/kg (G1, control group), 449 mg/kg (G2), 527 mg/kg (G3), 602 mg/kg (G4), and 675 mg/kg (G5). The results showed that the level of 527 mg/kg (G3) of GABA significantly increased the specific growth rate (SGR), weight gain rate (WGR), and final body weight (FBW) of Gibel carp, while the levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total cholesterol (TC), and glucose (GLU) were also increased significantly.

Introduction: Patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) with preoperative anemia are at higher risk for transfusion. Blood-conserving interventions can reduce perioperative transfusions. This retrospective study evaluates the efficacy and safety of a patient blood management (PBM) protocol in elective primary THA patients with preoperative anemia.

This study emphasizes the critical importance of closely monitoring and controlling the sialic acid content in therapeutic glycoproteins, including EPO, interferon-γ, Orencia, Enbrel, and others, as the level of sialylation directly impacts their pharmacokinetics (PK), immunogenicity, potency, and overall clinical performance due to its influence on protein clearance via hepatic asialoglycoprotein receptors (ASGPR). The ASGPR recognizes and binds to glycoproteins exposed to terminal galactose or N-acetylgalactosamine residues, leading to receptor-mediated endocytosis. Recent studies have demonstrated that sialylation of O-linked glycan plays a role in protecting against macrophage galactose lectin (MGL)-mediated clearance.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) used to treat hot flashes has side effects, such as an increased risk of coronary heart disease and breast cancer. There are ongoing controversies regarding the risk of ovarian cancer associated with HRT. HRT is best avoided in conditions such as liver or gallbladder disease and gastrointestinal disorders.

Background: Infertility is a significant issue in spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. Men with SCI often experience erectile and ejaculatory dysfunctions, and low sperm quality leading to impaired fertility. In this study, we investigated the effectiveness of Erythropoietin (EPO)alginate/chitosan (CH-AL) hydrogel on SCI-induced male rat infertility.
