Novel bis(beta-diketones) linked by 2,2'-biphenyldiyl, 2,2'-tolandiyl, and 2,2'-bis(methylene)biphenyl moieties have been prepared. All are metalated readily by titanium(IV) isopropoxide, but the nature of the complexes formed depends on the linker structure. The biphenyl-bridged ligand gives only traces of a mononuclear complex, which is thermodynamically unstable with respect to oligomerization. The tolan-bridged ligand does form mononuclear complexes, but only as a mixture of geometric isomers. In contrast, the substituted 2,2'-bis-(2,4-dioxobutyl)biphenyl ligands, R2BobH2 (R = tBu, p-Tol), react with Ti(OiPr)4 to give, initially, a mixture of monomer and oligomers, which is converted quantitatively to monomer upon heating in the presence of excess Ti(OiPr)4. Only a single relative configuration of the biphenyl and bis(chelate) titanium moieties, established by crystallography of (tBu2Bob)Ti(O-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2 to be the (R)-/(S)- diastereomer, is observed. The kinetic and thermodynamic robustness of the (R2Bob)Ti framework is confirmed by reactions with Lewis acids. For example, (Tol2Bob)Ti(OiPr)2 reacts with trimethylsilyl triflate or triflic acid to substitute one or both of the isopropoxide groups with triflates without any redistribution or loss of the diketonate ligands. Cationic complexes can be prepared by abstraction of triflate from (Tol2Bob)Ti(OiPr)(OTf) with Na[B(C6H3(CF3)2)4]. For example, in the presence of diethyl ether, the crystallographically characterized [(Tol2Bob)Ti(OiPr)(OEt2)][B(C6H3(CF3)2)4], containing a rapidly dissociating ether ligand, is formed.

A diprotic bis(β-thioketoimine) ligand precursor featuring a flexible 4,4'-methylbis(aniline) linker, H2, was synthesised treatment of the corresponding bis(β-ketoimine) with Lawesson's reagent. Lithiation of H2 and coordination with one equivalent of d-block metal(II) chlorides MCl(THF) (M = Fe, Co and Zn) yielded a corresponding series of homoleptic dinuclear complexes, [M(μ-2)]. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals a tetrahedral geometry for the two metals and a double-stranded helicate structure arising from inter-strand face-face π-stacking.

Metal-metal cooperativity is emerging as an important strategy in catalysis. This requires appropriate ligand scaffolds that can support two metals in close proximity. Here we report nickel-promoted formation of a dinucleating planar macrocyclic ligand that can support bimetallic dinickel(II) and dinickel(I) complexes.

A synthetic route has been developed for a series of 3d homobimetallic complexes of Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu using three different pyridyldiimine and pyridyldialdimine macrocyclic ligands with ring sizes of 18, 20, and 22 atoms. Crystallographic analyses indicate that while the distances between the metals can be modulated by the size of the macrocycle pocket, the flexibility in the alkyl linkers used to construct the macrocycles enables the ligand to adjust the orientation of the PD(A)I fragments in response to the geometry of the [M(μ-Cl)] core, particularly with respect to Jahn-Teller distortions. Analyses by UV-vis spectroscopy and SQUID magnetometry revealed deviations in the properties [M(μ-Cl)]-containing complexes bound by standard mononucleating ligands, highlighting the ability of macrocycles to use ring size to control the magnetic interactions of -octahedral, high-spin metal centers.

Molybdenum in redox non-innocent ligand environments features prominently in biological inorganic systems. While Holm and coworkers, along with many other researchers, have thoroughly investigated formally high-oxidation-state molybdenum (Mo(IV)-Mo(VI)) ligated by dithiolenes, less is known about molybdenum in other formal oxidation states and/or different redox-active ligand environments. This work focuses on the investigation of low-valent molybdenum in four different redox non-innocent nitrogen ligand type environments (mononucleating and dinucleating iminopyridine, mononucleating and dinucleating bis(imino)pyridine).

This work focuses on the application of dicobalt octacarbonyl (Co(CO)) as a metal precursor in the chemistry of formally low-valent cobalt with redox-active bis(imino)pyridine [NNN] ligands. The reactions of both mononucleating mesityl-substituted bis(aldimino)pyridine (L) and dinucleating macrocyclic xanthene-bridged di(bis(aldimino)pyridine) (L) with Co(CO) were investigated. Independent of the metal-to-ligand ratio (1 : 1 or 1 : 2 ligand to Co(CO)), the reaction of the dinucleating ligand L with Co(CO) produces a tetranuclear complex [Co(L)(CO)] featuring two discrete [Co[NNN](CO)] units.
