In January 2021, the Gulf Health Council (GHC), established the Gulf Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (Gulf CDC) in Riyadh, marking a pivotal step in harmonizing health strategies, enhancing knowledge generation, and promoting evidence-based approaches to both communicable (CD) and non-communicable diseases (NCD). The Gulf CDC's mission includes consolidating the region's health information systems, crucial for monitoring disease burden and shaping effective public health policies. An initial assessment of public health surveillance systems across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states was conducted by the Gulf CDC.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze surfactant apoprotein expression and detect Brucella sp. antigens in the lungs of aborted bovine fetuses and weak neonatal calves, utilizing techniques like ABC and indirect immunofluorescence.
  • Out of 46 aborted fetuses and 20 weak neonatal calves, researchers found Brucella sp. in 24 cases of pneumonia in fetuses and additional cases in newborns, with positive identification methods including bacterial culture and immunohistochemistry.
  • Findings revealed that surfactant synthesis in bovine fetuses starts around the 7th month of gestation, and broncho-pneumonia in calves suggests potential intrauterine Brucella

TLR4 and TNF-α single nucleotide polymorphisms in patients with brucellosis: Association with infection complications.

Eur J Intern Med

January 2025

Department of Medicine and Research Laboratory of Internal Medicine, National Expertise Centre of Greece in Autoimmune Liver Diseases, General University Hospital of Larissa, Larissa 41110, Greece.

Objectives: To investigate associations of the carriage of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of proteins involved in the immune response of patients with brucellosis.

Methods: A case control study of patients with brucellosis upon WHO criteria. Blood genomic analysis was performed by RFLP- PCR for the detection of SNPs: i) at promoters -376 G > A (rs1800750); -308 G > A (rs 1,800,629); -238 G > A (rs361525) of the TNF gene, ii) at -896 A > G Asp299Gly (rs4986790) and -1196 C > T Thr399Ile (rs4986791) positions of the TLR-4 gene.

Introduction: Porcine Parvovirus (PPV) is a significant pathogen in the pig industry, with eight genotypes, including PPV7, identified since its emergence in 2016. Co-infections with viruses such as Porcine Circovirus 2 (PCV2) and Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) pose serious risks to swine health. Thus, there is an urgent need for rapid, sensitive, and specific detection methods suitable for use in field settings or laboratories with limited resources.

Brucellosis is a zoonotic infectious disease widely seen worldwide, especially in developing countries and endemic regions where livestock farming is common. Brucella primarily affects the reticuloendothelial system and joints but can also localize in the central nervous, cardiovascular, and genitourinary systems. Pulmonary and urinary involvements are very rarely reported in the literature.
