AI Article Synopsis

  • The research investigates how colored biofilms, particularly from the genus Meiothermus, impact the paper industry by analyzing samples from 24 different machines in four countries.
  • Using real-time PCR, the study quantified Meiothermus presence in process deposits, revealing a significant range from 10,000 to 100 billion gene copies per gram of deposit.
  • It was found that Meiothermus spp. contribute to product defects, as they were common in paper and board products with color issues, with Meiothermus silvanus and M. ruber being the most frequently identified species.

Article Abstract

Colored biofilms cause problems in paper industry. In this work we used real-time PCR to detect and to quantitate members of the genus Meiothermus from the process samples and end products from 24 machines manufacturing pulp, paper and board in four countries. The results obtained from 200 samples showed the importance of members of the genus Meiothermus as ubiquitous biofoulers in paper machines. This genus was the dominant biofouler in some mills. From < or =10(4) to 10(11) copies of Meiothermus 16S rRNA genes were found per gram of process deposit (wet weight). Meiothermus spp. were found in paper and board products with colored defects and connection between deposit-forming microbes and end-product spots was shown. 16S rRNA gene sequences of 29 biofilm producing bacterial isolates from different mills were determined. Based on sequence data, 25 of the isolates were assigned to the genus Meiothermus, with Meiothermus silvanus and M. ruber as the most frequent species.

Nitrate (NO) contamination has become a significant global environmental issue. Traditional nitrate reduction processes typically require external pH control to maintain neutral conditions and prevent nitrite accumulation. In this study, a hydrogen-based membrane biofilm reactor (H-MBfR) was constructed without external pH regulation.

The aim of this study was to investigate both the microbial composition and absolute abundance of clinically relevant bacteria in tissue specimens from patients with chronic suppurative otitis media with cholesteatoma (CSOM with cholesteatoma). Mastoid mucosa and cholesteatoma tissue from eleven subjects with CSOM with cholesteatoma, and mastoid mucosa from ten controls were examined using standard hospital culture swabs, Gram staining, bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequencing, Droplet Digital PCR (ddPCR), and multiplex PCR. Positive results from culture swabs were reported in half the CSOM with cholesteatoma samples and 1 control sample.

Biofouling in membrane distillation (MD) has several repercussions, including reduced efficiency of the MD process and limiting membrane life. Additionally, the evaluation of MD biofouling using treated effluents from wastewater treatment plants remains an unexplored area. Thus, biofouling formation and development in a long term MD process (15 days) using treated effluent from a wastewater treatment plant was explored in this study.

Geothermally heated spring water contaminated with decomposed leaf biomass creates unique hot spring ecosystems that support the recycling of diverse nutrients and harbor microbial consortia capable of degrading lignocellulose. We present microbiome and transcriptome data from the bacterial consortium of Deulajhari hot springs, characterized by a temperature of approximately 58 °C and surrounded by a dense population of pandanus plants in Angul, Odisha, India. Metagenomics and metatranscriptomics datasets were generated by extracting total DNA and RNA from the consortium sample of hotspring sediment, followed by shotgun sequencing using the Illumina HiSeq 2500 platform.

Hydrogen-based membrane biofilm reactors (MBfRs) are effective for nitrogen removal. However, the safety of hydrogen limited the application of MBfR. Here, a hydrogen-based partial denitrification system coupled with anammox (H-PDA) was constructed in an MBfR for reducing hydrogen demand significantly.
