The stereoselectivity in the reduction of 4-benzoylpyridine (4-BP) was examined in the cytosolic fractions from the heart of 9 vertebrates (pig, rabbit, guinea pig, rat, mouse, chicken, soft-shelled turtle, frog and flounder). 4-BP was stereoselectively reduced to S(-)-alpha-phenyl-4-pyridylmethanol [S(-)-PPOL] in the cytosolic fractions from the heart of pig, rabbit and guinea pig. However, of mammalian heart cytsol tested, only rat heart cytosol had little ability to reduce stereoselectively 4-BP. In an attempt to elucidate this reason, amino acid sequence of rat heart carbonyl reductase (RatHCR) was deduced from the cloned cDNA and compared with that of pig heart carbonyl reductase (PigHCR), which shows a high stereoselectivity in the reduction of 4-BP to S(-)-PPOL. RatHCR showed a high identity with PigHCR in amino acid sequence. Furthermore, recombinant RatHCR was confirmed to reduce stereoselectively 4-BP to S(-)-PPOL with a high optical purity comparable to recombinant PigHCR. It is possible that in the cytosolic fraction from the heart of rat, constitutive reductase other than RatHCR counteracts the stereoselective reduction of 4-BP to S(-)-PPOL, by catalyzing the reduction of 4-BP to the R(+)-enantiomer.

Benzophenone-4 (BP-4), a widely utilized organic ultraviolet (UV) filter, is recognized as a pseudo-persistent contaminant in aquatic environments. To elucidate the effects and mechanisms of BP-4 on marine diatoms, an investigation was conducted on the growth rate, photosynthetic pigment content, photosynthetic parameters, antioxidant enzyme activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, cellular structure, and transcriptome profile of the model species, Phaeodactylum tricornutum. The results showed a pronounced inhibition of algal growth upon exposure to BP-4, with a 144 h-EC value of 201 mg·L.

An indigenous bacterium Pseudomonas sp. EN-4 had been reported earlier for its ability to co-metabolise 4-bromophenol (4-BP), in presence of phenol (100 mg/L) as co-substrate. The present study was undertaken to validate the efficacy of biotransformation by comparing the toxicity profiles of untreated and EN-4 transformed samples of 4-BP, using both plant and animal model.

Benzophenone-4 (BP-4) is one of the UV filters widely used in personal care products (PCPs). BP-4 has been identified as an emergent contaminant detected in influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) at high concentrations showing that conventional treatment is unable to remove it, subsequently, the presence of BP-4 in surface water is inevitable. In this study, we focus on the degradation of this compound by chlorine, and we report the efficiency of its removal from water by applying two advanced oxidation processes UV/TiO and UV/HO aiming to achieve a superior mineralization result.

The influence of a single H/H replacement on the frequency generation of different-size bubbles in the human interferon alpha-17 gene (IFNA17) under various energies was studied by a developed algorithm and mathematical modeling without simplifications or averaging. This new approach showed the efficacy of researching DNA bubbles and open states both when all hydrogen bonds in nitrogenous base pairs are protium and after an H-substitution. After a single deuterium substitution under specific energies, it was demonstrated that the non-coding region of IFNA17 had a more significant regulatory role in bubble generation in the whole gene than the promoter had.
