A range of species of Chlamydiales have previously been detected in a variety of Australian marsupials, including koalas and western barred bandicoots. Thirty-seven ocular, urogenital, or nasal swabs were obtained from 21 wild western barred bandicoots. Chlamydia culture and antibiotic susceptibility testing were performed for cycloheximide-treated HEp-2 cells in 96-well microtiter plates. Chlamydia spp. were isolated from 11 specimens from 9 (42.8%) bandicoots. All isolates were identified as Chlamydiales by conventional PCR with 16S and 23S rRNA gene primers specific to Chlamydiales and were confirmed to be Chlamydia pneumoniae by a C. pneumoniae-specific ompA-based real-time PCR assay and 16S rRNA and 23S rRNA gene signature sequence analyses. The MICs of azithromycin, doxycycline, ciprofloxacin, and enrofloxacin for 10 C. pneumoniae isolates from these bandicoots ranged from 0.015 to 1 microg/ml, 0.25 to 1 microg/ml, 0.25 to 2 microg/ml, and 0.25 to 0.5 microg/ml, respectively. The MICs at which 90% of isolates were inhibited and the minimal bactericidal concentrations were within the ranges reported previously for human isolates of C. pneumoniae.

Meteorological droughts often propagate to agricultural (and other) droughts, both spatially and temporally. The present study proposes a novel complex networks-based cascading spatial drought network to examine the spatial propagation of meteorological droughts in a region to agricultural droughts in other regions. This is done through: (1) establishing stable homogeneous drought communities; (2) investigating inter-community drought propagation; (3) locating drought sources; and (4) evaluating drought connections within major crop belts.

Although the barred sand burrower, Limnichthys fasciatus, is widely distributed throughout the western Pacific, including Japan, Taiwan, and Australia, its morphology and genetics are poorly known. We discovered four cryptic species of Limnichthys from the western Pacific based on mtDNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) sequences. Genetic distances showed remarkably large differences (12.

We measured the distribution of seagrass beds and species composition and abundance of seagrass and associated macroalgae and macroinvertebrates in 3 years over a 47-year period (1969, 1994, 2016) at Carriacou, Granada, an area not heavily impacted by local human activity. Seagrass cover and physical parameters of fringing beds were measured in transects at high (HWE) and low wave energy (LWE) sites; frequency of occurrence of all species, and biomass and morphology of seagrasses, were measured at 100 m2 stations around the island.

Most of Switzerland is inhabited by the nominotypical subspecies of the barred grass snake (), which is characterized by mitochondrial DNA lineage E. Only in the northeast of the country, the common grass snake () occurs and hybridizes with in a narrow contact zone. However, we discovered that in southern and western Switzerland barred grass snakes representing another mtDNA lineage (lineage C) are widely distributed.
