Published: September 2007

We report a family of a man and two of his three male children who all had torsion of the left testis, all at the age of 15 years and all occurring during sleep. Their management and the possible modes of inheritance are discussed.

Unusual presentation of an aggressive ovarian malignancy in a young pregnant woman.

BMJ Case Rep

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, NHS Ayrshire and Arran, Ayr, South Ayrshire, UK.

Cancer during pregnancy is uncommon. Symptoms caused by new cancers in pregnancy can be difficult to recognise leading to a delay in diagnosis and treatment. Ovarian cancer during pregnancy poses a further diagnostic challenge due to the vague symptoms that it can present, along with difficulty in the interpretation of tumour markers.

Silanediol-Bay-Bridge Rigidified Axially Chiral Perylene Bisimide.

J Org Chem

January 2025

Center for Nanosystems Chemistry (CNC), Universität Würzburg, Theodor-Boveri-Weg, 97074 Würzburg, Germany.

Chiral organic molecules with a complementing π-structure are highly desired to obtain materials with good semiconducting properties and pronounced chirality effects in the visible region. Herein, we introduce a novel design strategy to achieve an axially chiral and rigid perylene bisimide (PBI) dye by attaching the chirality-inducing 2,2'-biphenoxy moiety at one side of the bay area and the rigidity-inducing di--butylsilanediol bridge on the other side. This yielded a new bay-functionalized PBI derivative carrying the combination of a highly rigid and, simultaneously, an axially chiral perylene core.

Article Synopsis
  • A new nematode species from small rodents in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, was identified using microscopy and genetic sequencing.
  • The species exhibits unique physical traits such as interrupted ridges and distinct characteristics in males and females.
  • Genetic analysis indicates low variability among specimens from different rodent hosts, suggesting this nematode can expand its host range effectively.

Unusual Thermo-Enhanced Second Harmonic Generation in Organic Configurationally-Locked Polyene Crystals.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Structure Chemistry, Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fuzhou, Fujian, 350002, P. R. China.

To modulate nonlinear optical (NLO) effects of crystalline material holds great application potential in the photoelectronic and optical fields. Organic configurationally-locked polyene represents an exciting NLO family with large second harmonic generation (SHG) effects, whereas it is a huge blank to switch and modulate their NLO property through external stimuli. For the first time, here present unusual thermo-enhanced SHG activities are presented in a polyene-based NLO compound, 2-{3-[2-(4-pyrrolidinphenyl)vinyl]-5,5-dimethylcyclohex-2-enylidene}malononitrile (1), giving a record-high magnitude of SHG enhancement up to ≈170% during its isomorphic phase transition.

Article Synopsis
  • Testicular torsion is an urgent surgical condition that can lead to severe damage and potential infertility in men; the NLRP3 inflammasome plays a role in the resulting complications.
  • An experimental study was conducted on male Wistar rats to assess the protective effects of nanocurcumin (nCur) on testicular tissue after inducing ischemia-reperfusion injury by twisting the testis.
  • Results showed that nCur treatment improved testicular health by reducing damage and inflammation, suggesting it might be a beneficial therapy to mitigate the negative effects of testicular torsion.
