Objective: Ghrelin, known for its orexigenic activity, also have functions such as vasodilation and a growth hormone releasing action. It is uncertain whether these functions change with increasing age. This study aimed to determine whether ghrelin levels differ between young and older women with different levels of obesity; and secondly whether the associations of ghrelin with metabolic syndrome (MS) components, adipocytokines, coagulation factors, and cortisol change with increasing age.

Methods And Results: Caucasian women (N=107) were divided into young (19-29 years) and older groups (30-56 years). Fasting ghrelin, leptin, adiponectin, glucose, insulin, cortisol, fibrinogen and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) levels were determined. Blood pressure (BP), body mass index and waist circumferences were measured. Older lean women showed lower levels of ghrelin (p<0.05) than young lean women, with no differences regarding BP, obesity, lipids, adipokines or insulin resistance (IR). Ghrelin levels of older women remained constant with increasing obesity, but younger women showed significantly reduced ghrelin levels in obese groups. Only younger women showed significant correlations between ghrelin and leptin, adiponectin, fibrinogen and PAI-1 (adjusted for age, obesity and menstrual phase), whereas both age groups showed significant correlations with IR. In younger women factor analysis grouped ghrelin with coagulation factors and all MS components. In older women ghrelin was absent from the MS cluster, but was associated with lower BP, cortisol and IR.

Conclusions: Ghrelin levels were not significantly elevated in lean older women, and did not change with increased obesity in older women--as were observed in younger women. The functions of ghrelin also seem to change with increased age since only in young women ghrelin was associated with obesity, coagulation factors and leptin.

Prolactin Response to a Submaximal Dose of Ghrelin in Different Phases of the Normal Menstrual Cycle.

Medicina (Kaunas)

December 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Medicine, School of Health Sciences, University of Thessaly, 41500 Larissa, Greece.

A similar secretory pattern of prolactin (PRL) and growth hormone (GH) during the menstrual cycle has been reported in response to a high dose of ghrelin in adult healthy women. The present study aimed to assess the pattern of PRL and GH secretions in response to a submaximal dose of ghrelin during different menstrual phases in adult healthy women. Eight female subjects with normal cyclicity were enrolled.

: In this study, the effects of an eight-week exercise and nutrition program on blood lipids, glucose, insulin, insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), leptin, ghrelin, irisin, malondialdehyde (MDA), and Growth Differentiation Factor 15 (GDF15) in overweight women were investigated. : A total of 48 women volunteers participated in this study. The participants were randomly divided into four groups: control (C), exercise (E), nutrition (N), exercise + nutrition (E + N).

Inhibition of the MyD88 signaling pathway could upregulates Ghrelin expression to synergistically regulate hepatic -infected progression.

Introduction: AE and whether the inhibition of the MyD88 inflammatory pathway can enhance Ghrelin expression to collaboratively modulate AE progression remains unclear.

Methods: In this study, we evaluated Ghrelin serum levels and changes in TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB pathway proteins and inflammatory factors in AE patients and mouse models at different stages of infection (-4, -8, and -12 weeks). Additionally, we administered the MyD88 inhibitor TJ-M2010-5 intraperitoneally to infected mice to evaluate alterations in inflammation and Ghrelin levels, as well as disease progression.

Satiety-enhancing placebo intervention decreases selective attention to food cues.

Institute of Medical Psychology, Faculty of Medicine, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, Munich, Germany.

Background: As placebo interventions could influence appetite and satiety in first studies, they are a promising tool for the future treatment of obesity. Furthermore, individuals with heightened body weight show increased selective attention for food cues. This study aimed to investigate whether placebo induced changes of appetite and satiety can affect attention allocation and to examine correlating factors.

Liangxue Tongyu Prescription (LTP) is a classic herbal formula for treating acute intracerebral hemorrhage (AICH) in China. Previous studies have shown that LTP significantly ameliorates neurological impairments and gastrointestinal dysfunction in patients with AICH. However, the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear.
