Abnormalities of intracellular ion concentrations and transmembrane fluxes were reported in uremia. In RBC from 12 chronically hemodialyzed patients (age 41 + 12, 7 men, 5 women; mean dialysis duration 31 + 24 months), we evaluated the acute effects of hemodialysis on intracellular Na and K concentrations, ouabain sensitive Na/K pump, furosemide sensitive Na/K cotransport, Na/Li countertransport, and passive permeability to Na. Six patients were normotensive and 6 were taking antihypertensive drugs which were withdrawn before the study. When compared to our normal reference group, uremic patients showed a significant increase in intracellular K concentration and a significant decrease in ouabain-sensitive Na/K pump. Intracellular sodium was not increased. No correlation was found between the activity of sodium-potassium pump and the duration of hemodialysis. The other transport systems were comparable to normal. No significant change was observed between the values measured before and after dialysis. Ouabain sensitive Na/K pump was lower in hypertensive as compared to normotensive patients, but this difference was not significant. Our data support the existence of ion transport derangements in uremia, which are not acutely affected by hemodialysis.

Upon exposure to salt stress, calcium signaling in plants activates various stress-responsive genes and proteins along with enhancement in antioxidant defense to eventually regulate the cellular homeostasis for reducing cytosolic sodium levels. The coordination among the calcium signaling molecules and transporters plays a crucial role in salinity tolerance. In the present study, twenty-one diverse indigenous rice genotypes were evaluated for salt tolerance during the early seedling stage, and out of that nine genotypes were further selected for physio-biochemical study.

Plants produce defensive toxins to deter herbivores. In response, some specialized herbivores evolved resistance and even the capacity to sequester toxins, affecting interactions at higher trophic levels. Here, we test the hypothesis that potential natural enemies of specialized herbivores are differentially affected by plant toxins depending on their level of adaptation to the plant-herbivore system.

As an emerging ionic sensor with low-voltage operation (<1 V), biocompatibility, and stable operation in aqueous environments, organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have attracted significant research interest for various biofluid-related ion detection, where minor ion concentration variations can effectively reflect health or pathology states. However, OECT-based ion sensors are currently limited by restricted device transconductance g and stabilites, which severely hinder their applications in actual ion sensing scenarios. Here, ultra-sensitive multi-ion sensors based on high-performance n-type vertical OECTs (accumulation mode, g = 58 mS) for Na, K, and Ca detection in a practical biofluid (effluent from continuous renal replacement therapy), are demonstrated with high accuracy and stability, which are comparable to conventional Roche method.

Self-Diffusion of Star and Linear Polyelectrolytes in Salt-Free and Salt Solutions.

Macromolecules

January 2025

Department of Materials Science & Engineering, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas 77840, United States.

This work explored solution properties of linear and star poly(methacrylic acids) with four, six, and eight arms (PMAA, 4PMAA, PMAA, and 8PMAA, respectively) of matched molecular weights in a wide range of pH, salt, and polymer concentrations. Experimental measurements of self-diffusion were performed by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS), and the results were interpreted using the scaling theory of polyelectrolyte solutions. While all PMAAs were pH sensitive and showed an increase in hydrodynamic radius ( ) with pH in the dilute regime, the of star polymers (measured at basic pH values) was significantly smaller for the star polyacids due to their more compact structure.
