Nicotine and serotonin modulate the innate and adaptive immune responses and the inflammatory states. Several nicotinic cholinergic and serotonergic receptor subtypes have been characterized in B and T lymphocytes, monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. The use of knockout mice has allowed a better characterization of nicotinic receptors and their role in anti-inflammatory processes in these cells. Cytokines play a crucial role in controlling inflammatory reactions. Nicotine and serotonin have been reported to regulate cytokine release. Cholinergic mechanisms also play an important role in inflammation through endogenous acetylcholine. Nicotine mimics this effect by activating the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathways. New concepts of reciprocal interactions between nicotine and serotonin are emerging. The role of nicotine as an anti-inflammatory agent has been established, whereas that of serotonin remains more controversial.

Background: The present study aims to assess the therapeutic potential of vitamin C (Vit C) on anxiety- and depressive-like behavior induced by abstinence from chronic nicotine-ethanol co-exposure in adolescent male rats.
Materials And Methods: Adolescent male rats were divided into seven experimental groups with ten rats as follows: 1) vehicle, 2) Nicotine (Nic)-Ethanol (Eth): received Nic (2 mg/kg) and Eth (20%) in drinking water from 21 to 42 days of age, 3-5) Nic-Eth-Vit C 100/200/400: received Nic and Eth from 21 to 42 days of age and received Vit C 100/200/400 mg/kg from 43 to 63 days of age, 6) Nic-Eth-Bupropion (Bup)- Naloxone (Nal): received Nic and Eth from 21 to 42 days of age and received Bup and Nal from 43 to 63 days of age, and 7) Vit C 400 mg/kg: received Vit C 400 mg/kg from 43 to 63 days of age. Behavioral assessments were done by elevated plus maze (EPM), forced swimming test (FST), marble burring test (MBT), and open field tests (OFT).

: Major depressive disorder (MDD) frequently co-occurs with substance use disorders such as alcohol and nicotine use disorders. Comorbid substance use disorders worsen the clinical symptoms of MDD and exacerbate addictive behaviors and presentations. However, the relationship between MDD and betel quid use disorder (BUD) in Taiwan has not been extensively investigated.

Bupropion (Bup), an antidepressant, is used to treat depression and aid in quitting smoking. We aim to investigate the influence of Bup on nicotine withdrawal (NW)-associated disturbances in serotonergic neurotransmission and behavior in mice. Adult albino mice were categorized into control and NW groups.

Preclinical and human studies indicate psilocybin may reduce perseverant maladaptive behaviors, including nicotine and alcohol seeking. Such studies in the opioid field are lacking, though opioids are involved in >50% of overdose deaths. Psilocybin is an agonist at the serotonin 2A receptor (5-HTR), a well-documented target for modulation of drug seeking, and evidence suggests 5-HTR agonists may dampen motivation for opioids.

Passive smoking from environmental tobacco smoke not only increases the risk of lung cancer and cardiovascular disease but may also be a stressor triggering neuropsychiatric and other disorders. To prevent these diseases, understanding the relationship between passive smoking and stress is vital. In this study, we developed a simple and sensitive method to simultaneously measure nicotine (Nic) and cotinine (Cot) as tobacco smoke exposure biomarkers, and cortisol (CRT), serotonin (5-HT), melatonin (MEL), dopamine (DA), and oxytocin (OXT) as stress-related biomarkers.
