Increased concentrations of P2X7R in oligodendrocyte derived extracellular vesicles of Multiple sclerosis patients.

Neurobiol Dis

Activation of the purinergic receptor P2X7 (P2X7R) is believed to be deleterious in autoimmune diseases and it was hypothesized to play a role in the pathogenesis of MS. P2X7R is an ATP-gated non-selective cationic channel; its activation can be driven by high concentrations of ATP and leads to the generation of large, cytolytic conductance pores. P2X7R activation can also result in apoptosis as a consequence of the activation of the caspase cascade via P2X7R-dependent stimulation of the NLRP3 inflammasome.

Pulses of South Atlantic water into the tropical North Atlantic since 1825 from coral isotopes.

Sci Adv

December 2023

Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, UMR 7154, CNRS Paris Sorbonne Paris Cité, Paris, France.

Decadal and multidecadal changes in the meridional overturning circulation may originate from either the subpolar North Atlantic or the Southern Hemisphere. New records of carbon and oxygen isotopes from an eastern Martinique Island (Lesser Antilles) coral reveal irregular, decadal, double-step events of low ∆C and enhanced vertical mixing, high δO and high δC values starting in 1885. Comparison of the new and published ∆C records indicates that the last event (1956-1969) coincides with a widespread, double-step ∆C low of South Atlantic origin from 32°N to 18°S, associated with a major slowdown of the Caribbean Current transport between 1963 and 1969.

Coulomb Blockade in a Nonthermalized Quantum Dot.

Phys Rev Lett

November 2023

School of Computer Science and Digital Technologies, Aston University, Birmingham, B4 7ET, United Kingdom.

We investigate nonequilibrium transport properties of a quantum dot in the Coulomb blockade regime under the condition of negligible inelastic scattering during the dwelling time of the electrons in the dot. Using the quantum kinetic equation we show that the absence of thermalization leads to a double step in the distribution function of electrons on the dot, provided that it is symmetrically coupled to the leads. This drastically changes nonlinear transport through the dot resulting in an additional (compared to the thermalized case) jump in the conductance at voltages close to the charging energy, which could serve as an experimental manifestation of the absence of thermalization.

Red phosphorus decorated electrospun carbon anodes for high efficiency lithium ion batteries.

Sci Rep

August 2020

Dipartimento di Chimica, Materiali e Ingegneria Chimica "Giulio Natta", Politecnico di Milano, Via Mancinelli, 7, 20131, Milan, Italy.

Electrospinning is a powerful and versatile technique to produce efficient, specifically tailored and high-added value anodes for lithium ion batteries. Indeed, electrospun carbon nanofibers (CNFs) provide faster intercalation kinetics, shorter diffusion paths for ions/electrons transport and a larger number of lithium insertion sites with respect to commonly employed powder materials. With a view to further enhance battery performances, red phosphorous (RP) is considered one of the most promising materials that can be used in association with CNFs.

Role of C‒H bond in the antioxidant activities of rooperol and its derivatives: A DFT study.

Phytochemistry

October 2020

College of Animal Sciences (College of Bee Science), Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, Fuzhou, 350002, PR China. Electronic address:

Rooperol and its derivatives, derived from the Hypoxis rooperi plant, are polyphenolic and norlignan compounds with excellent antioxidant activities. The reaction enthalpies for the free-radical scavenging by rooperol and its six derivatives were studied using density functional theory. We found that the C-H groups played a significant role in the antioxidant activities in non-polar phases.
