A real time quantitative PCR (RQ-PCR) assay was developed for measurement of differential expression of the genes encoding the acute phase reactant serum amyloid A (SAA), transferrin (TF) and a C-type lectin molecule (CL) in skin, blood and liver from Cyprinus carpio following infection with the ectoparasite Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. Serum amyloid A and CL were constitutively expressed in all organs evaluated while TF transcripts were only detected in the liver. A dramatic up-regulation (1600 times) in the expression levels of SAA was observed in skin 36 h after the parasite infection. A similar increase in the number of RNA molecules encoding for SAA was observed in the liver. The CL expression was significantly down regulated in all the organs and no significant change was observed in the expression levels of the TF in the liver. These results indicate that SAA plays a major role in the acute phase response in fish infected with I. multifiliis and emphasize the importance of the fish skin as an active organ in response to an ectoparasite infection.

Background: The aim of this study was to explore the clinical application value of serum inflammatory markers in the diagnosis and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in elderly men.
Methods: From April 2023 through July 2023, 110 BPH patients and 120 healthy individuals who underwent examinations at our hospital were selected as study subjects. The concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), serum amyloid A (SAA), complement 3 (C3), and complement 4 (C4) were measured in both groups.

Microfluidic chips are powerful tools for investigating numerous variables including chemical and physical parameters on protein aggregation. This study investigated the aggregation of bovine serum albumin (BSA) in two different systems: a vial-based static system and a microfluidic chip-based dynamic system in which BSA aggregation was induced successfully. BSA aggregation induced in a microfluidic chip on a timescale of seconds enabled a dynamic investigation of the forces driving the aggregation process.

Hyperglycemia accelerates Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression, yet the role of monosaccharides remains unclear. Here, it is demonstrated that mannose, a hexose, closely correlates with the pathological characteristics of AD, as confirmed by measuring mannose levels in the brains and serum of AD mice, as well as in the serum of AD patients. AD mice are given mannose by intra-cerebroventricular injection (ICV) or in drinking water to investigate the effects of mannose on cognition and AD pathological progression.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most commonly occurring brain disorder, characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau, subsequently leading to neurocognitive decline. 3-Amino-1-propanesulfonic acid (TPS) and its prodrug, currently under clinical trial III, serve as promising therapeutic agents targeting Aβ pathology by specifically preventing monomer-to-oligomer formation. Inspired by the potency of TPS prodrug, we hypothesized that conjugating TPS with human serum albumin (HSA) could enhance brain delivery and synergistically inhibit Aβ aggregation in mild to moderate AD.
