Two new life attenuated vaccines have been granted this year a marketing authorization by European and American regulatory agencies. One, Rotarix, is a monovalent vaccine derived from a human strain and takes advantage of the cross-reactivity between human Rotavirus strains. The other, RotaTeq, is a pentavalent human-bovine reassortant. These 2 vaccines have been shown to have an excellent safety profile in clinical trials and are highly effective in protecting infants against severe manifestations of Rotavirus gastroenteritis. In industrialized countries, the incidence of Rotavirus infection has not been reduced by the improvement of economic and sanitary conditions and are still associated with severe morbidity and an important economic impact. When they are administered at the same time as DTPa-VHB-IPV/Hib and Pn7V vaccines, they do not interfere with the immune response against the 7 valencies included in these vaccines. The widespread use of these vaccines should allow to control Rotavirus infections in the European context.

Objectives: The number of post-marketing studies assessing the vaccine effectiveness (VE) of the Lanzhou lamb rotavirus vaccine (LLR, licensed in 2000 exclusively in China) and the oral human attenuated pentavalent rotavirus vaccine (RotaTeq, licensed in China in 2018) in China is limited.
Methods: A test-negative case-control study based on prospective surveillance was conducted among diarrhea patients aged 5 years and younger at five hospitals in Shanghai, China. Cases and controls were defined based on the results of real-time fluorescent quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) of fecal samples for rotavirus.
Background: Viral gastroenteritis is a significant global health concern. An effective, rapid, and easy-to-use diagnostic tool is essential for screening causative viruses.
Methods: Forty-eight samples, known to be infected with one of the following viruses: norovirus, group A rotavirus, astrovirus, adenovirus, and sapovirus determined by reverse transcription-PCR and nucleotide sequencing, were evaluated by the Fast Track Diagnostics (FTD) viral gastroenteritis assay.
