We have used electrospray mass spectrometry to examine the dimerization of EFLIVKS, a reversed sequence analog of part of the neuropeptide head activator, and other similar analogs. Observation of the EFLIVKS gas phase dimer is concentration-dependent, with a half-saturation concentration for relative dimer formation of 7.8 microM, similar to that of SKVILFE of 12 microM. The lowest energy conformers from quenched molecular dynamics simulations suggest EFLIVKS may dimerize in the gas phase by formation of multiple ion pairs across the dimer interface. Alanine-scan mutants also dimerize in the gas phase, with replacement of the interior residues FLIVK diminishing dimerization. The concentration-dependence of the EFLIVKS circular dichroism spectrum at pH 7.5 suggests the existence of different conformation states at different concentrations, but does not provide evidence supporting the saturable dimer formation in solution. Different analogs of EFLIVKS, when fused to each end of a 18mer unfolded peptide, induce solution structures with T(m)s of 42-50 degrees C. These peptides and analogs may thus be useful for the noncovalent constraint of peptides and peptide library members used in cellular screens.

Background The synthetic opioid tramadol is widely used as a pain reliever. Unlike other opioids, it is used freely worldwide, unaffected by international controls resulting in abuse and accidental intoxication. Analytical methods are necessary to prove tramadol abuse because 30% of the drug is excreted unchanged.

Engineering Lattice Dislocations of TiO Support of PdZn-ZnO Dual-Site Catalysts to Boost CO Hydrogenation to Methanol.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

December 2024

Collaborative Innovation Center of Chemical Science and Engineering (Tianjin), State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering, Haihe Laboratory of Sustainable Chemical Transformations, Tianjin Key Laboratory of Applied Catalysis Science and Engineering, School of Chemical Engineering & Technology, Tianjin University, Tianjin, 300072, P. CO hydrogenation to methanol using green hydrogen derived from renewable resources provides a promising method for sustainable carbon cycle but suffers from high selectivity towards byproduct CO. Here, we develop an efficient PdZn-ZnO/TiO catalyst by engineering lattice dislocation structures of TiO support. We discover that this modification orders irregularly arranged atoms in TiO to stabilize crystal lattice, and consequently weakens electronic interactions with supported active phases.

Control of Permanent Porosity in Type 3 Porous Liquids via Solvent Clustering.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Geochemistry Department, Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87123, United States.

Porous liquids (PLs) are an exciting new class of materials for carbon capture due to their high gas adsorption capacity and ease of industrial implementation. They are composed of sorbent particles suspended in a nonadsorbed solvent, forming a liquid with permanent porosity. While PLs have a vast number of potential compositions based on the number of solvents and sorbent materials available, most of the research has been focused on the selection of the sorbent rather than the solvent.

Gas-phase conformational landscape and ring-puckered structure of 1-aminoindane.

January 2025

Universidad de Valladolid Facultad de Ciencias, Química Física y Química Inorgánica, SPAIN.

Indane-based molecules are effective scaffolds for different pharmaceutical products, so it is relevant to analyze the relation between structure and functionality in indane derivatives. Here, we have characterized the conformational landscape and molecular structure of 1-aminoindane in the gas phase using chirped-excitation Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopy and computational methods. The rotational spectrum confirmed the presence of two conformers, which were identified based on their rotational constants and 14N nuclear quadrupole coupling tensor elements.

The durability and flame retardancy of cotton fabrics have been the focus of long-term research. In this paper, a method for preparing flame retardants through the direct modification of biomass was proposed, and the durable flame retardant of homologous cottonseed meal modified biomass flame retardants for cotton fabrics was achieved through biomass composition analysis and modeling. In this study, a cottonseed meal-phosphoric acid-boric acid synergistic bio-based flame retardant (CPB) was synthesized and characterized.
