The title compound, [ZnI2(bipy)]n (bipy is 4,4'-bipyridine, C10H8N2), has been prepared by the hydrothermal reaction of ZnI2 and bipy at 433 K. Each Zn atom is coordinated by two N atoms from two different bipy ligands and by two I atoms in a distorted tetrahedral geometry, with Zn-N distances ranging from 2.068 (7) to 2.101 (8) A and Zn-I distances ranging from 2.5471 (13) to 2.5673 (13) A. The molecular structure features a zigzag polymeric chain. Face-to-face pi-pi stacking interactions between adjacent bipy ligands stabilize the structure.

Background/objectives: Cancer remains one of the major challenges of our century. Organometallic ruthenium complexes are gaining recognition as a highly promising group of compounds in the development of cancer treatments.
Methods: Building on the auspicious results obtained for [Ru(η-CH)(PPh)(bipy)][CFSO] (TM34), our focus has shifted to examining the effects of incorporating bioactive ligands into the TM34 framework, particularly within the cyclopentadienyl ring.

A low oxygen level in solid tumors is behind the modern concept of selective chemotherapy by hypoxia-activated prodrugs, such as heteroleptic complexes of transition metals (cobalt(III), iron(III) or platinum(IV)) with bi- or tetradentate ligands and an anticancer drug molecule as a co-ligand. A series of new cobalt(III) complexes [Co(LR)(esc)]ClO with esculetin (6,7-dihydroxycoumarin) and 2,2'-bipyridines (2,2'-bipy) functionalized by different substituents R were probed in the hypoxia-activated delivery of this model anticancer drug. Their combined study by cyclic voltammetry and NMR spectroscopy allowed identifying linear correlations of the electrochemical reduction potentials and the rate of the hypoxia-activated dissociation of [Co(LR)(esc)]ClO with the Hammett constants of the substituents in 2,2'-bipy ligands.

2D and 3D porous coordination networks (PCNs) as exemplified by metal-organic frameworks, MOFs, have garnered interest for their potential utility as sorbents for molecular separations and storage. The inherent modularity of PCNs has enabled the development of crystal engineering strategies for systematic fine-tuning of pore size and chemistry in families of related PCNs. The same cannot be said about one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers, CPs, which are understudied with respect to porosity.

Two octa-coordinated lanthanum (III) complexes of deprotonated azaphosphor β-diketon and diimine ligands, [LnLQ] (L = [ClCHC(O)NP(O)(NCH)], Q = Phen (C1) and Bipy (C2)), were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and NMR spectra. X-ray crystallography revealed a distorted tetragonal antiprism LaO6N2 coordination geometry around the lanthanum atom in both compounds. Nano-sized complexes (Ć1 and Ć2) were synthesized via a sonochemical process and analyzed using SEM and XRPD.

Four new and one previously reported silver 4,4'-vinylenedipyridine (Vpe) coordination polymers were tested as anion exchange materials to assess their potential for pollutant sequestration and compared to analogous silver 4,4'-bipyridine (bipy) coordination polymers. The materials were synthesized using nitrate, tetrafluoroborate, perchlorate, perrhenate, or chromate as the anion to produce cationic coordination polymers with solubilities ranging from 0.0137(7) to 0.
